Insufficient quality of public automated external defibrillator recordings in the greater Paris area, a descriptive study

Abstract: BackgroundWestern countries report a significant increase in the proportion of patients who experience out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCAs) and benefit from a public automated external defibrillator (pAED) before the arrival of rescue teams. However, recordings of devices recovered after resuscitation are of variable quality. Analysis of these data may inform decisions of whether to implement an internal defibrillator for survivors, and provide useful information about the performance of pAED algorithms and… Show more

“…In practice, equipment maintenance methods vary greatly. The maintenance process may be affected by human error, poor quality of spare parts, insufficient maintenance time and other factors, so that the equipment cannot be restored to a new state [30,31]. Based on this, researchers proposed maintenance concepts other than perfect maintenance, such as imperfect maintenance and minor maintenance [32].…”

“…Some AEDs provide visual and audible operational guidance, which simplifies their use [7]. However, there have been instances where the shock was not delivered despite the announcement [8,9]. The effectiveness of AED operational guidance can be compromised by environmental factors at the scene of a cardiac arrest and the user's skill level.…”
