Instrumentation and performance evaluation of the XRS on SELENE orbiter

Abstract: The x-ray fluorescence spectrometer (XRS) on board Japanese lunar polar orbiter SELENE (Kaguya) will provide global distribution of major elemental composition on the lunar surface in energy range of characteristic K-α x-ray line emission for Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, and Fe. These measurements will contribute to research of lunar origin and its evolution. The XRS shows a good energy resolution within 200 eV at 5.9 keV relying on charge coupled device (CCD) as photon energy dispersive detector. Total collective area… Show more

“…It is therefore essential to investigate the particle size effect in XRF in more detail. The aim of this study was to thoroughly investigate the angular dependency of XRF intensity from a rough surface and addresses the importance of this effect, especially for the X-ray Spectrometer (XRS) experiments onboard the SELENE orbiter (Okada et al, 2002;Shirai et al, 2008).…”

“…Finally, in order to simulate the energy resolution of the CCDs which expands each emission line, the Gaussian distribution (normal distribution) function was applied to all the energy bins of spectra. Typical energy resolution of the CCDs experimentally estimated is approximately 150 eV at Si-Kα, and 190 eV at Fe-Kα as the FWHM of the emission lines (Shirai et al, 2008).…”

“…The SOL-B and SOL-C will correct any spectral fluctuation caused by various solar activity. Detailed instrumentation and performances of the XRS are reported in other papers (Yamamoto et al, 2007;Shirai et al, 2008). SELENE will observe the Moon from nearly polar 100km circular orbits at a ground speed of approximately 1.5 km/s (Kato et al, 2007).…”

“…The scientific instruments were categorized into five groups depending on their purposes. The groups are as follows: (1) x-ray spectrometer (XRS) and gamma-ray spectrometer (GRS) to determine the elemental abundance (Shirai et al 2008;Hasebe et al 2008);…”
