Instillation of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide or Distilled Vinegar in Urethral Catheter Drainage Bag to Decrease Catheter-Associated Bacteriuria

Abstract: Patients with indwelling catheters acquire urinary tractinfections ata rate of 5% perday. After 30 days of catheterization, there is a 78% to 95% incidence of bacteriuria, despite the use of meticulous catheter care. “…The fact that vinegar had no notable immediate effect on urinary bacteria but decreased the bacterial titer over time suggests that vinegar ingestion may inhibit bacterial growth in urine. Washington (2001) found that irrigating urine bags with vinegar reduced the amount of bacteria in urine.
