Installation of the Laminaria Suction Piles ? A Case History

Abstract: The Laminaria FPSO installed in 1999 represented the first use of suction piles in the calcareous soils offshore Australia. This paper will describe aspects of the site investigation performed, it will discuss the a-prioi predictions for the suction pile installation characteristics and will present a detailed back analysis of the actual measured data obtained during the suction pile installation. In light of these findings, centrifuge model tests reported previously at OTC will also be reinterpreted. The impl… Show more

“…In clays, the caisson installation is generally under undrained conditions: the pressures within the caisson decrease sharply and those outside the caisson are usually little affected. The soil flowing into the caisson from its tip may not only fully around ring stiffeners, but also trends to extrude as a self-supporting inner plug [86].…”

“…Upper bound analysis of the flow mechanism for that case allows appropriate assessment of the net bearing resistance of the lowest stiffener, which should be added to reverse bearing resistance of the annular caisson tip (Erbrich and Hefer, 2002). “…The gradient of the soil undrained shear strength was adopted as k = 2 kPa/m in this study. Although this is a higher gradient than found in the Gulf of Mexico (Quirós et al, 2000), it is in line with other regions where suction caissons are used (Colliat et Load capacity of caisson anchors exposed to seabed trenching Feng/Gourvenec/White Ocean Engineering_accepted_Sept 2018 8 al., 2010; Erbrich and Hefer, 2002). The soil was modelled as linear elastic, perfectly plastic obeying a Tresca failure criterion.…”
