A study on Sander lucioperca age classes to assess preference for background color was imagined. Two groups: G1 (92 days old, average weight: 6.2 ±1.6 g) and G2 (461 days and 101.7 ±27.1 g), were continuously observed for 24 hours after one day of acclimation, using 90 fish / group (30 fish / replication / 24 hours), their behavior being recorded with cam-recorders. For the study, the walls and bottom of a rectangular research tank were colored equally in: grey, light and dark blue and green. During the study, were made 216 observations / group (72 observations / replication) and were statistically analyzed using Duncan test, with a confidence level of P˂ 0.05 or lower. Results revealed that a significant number from G1 was located on the green space, in order, preferred background color being: green, grey, dark and light blue. The G2 group expressed also high affinity for the green color (P< 0.001) concluding that, green background can give a safety feeling to the pikeperch, thus, rearing or transport of pikeperch categories in green tanks could have the benefit of stress decreasing and added benefit for this fish species in the aim of advancing the Recirculating Aquaculture Systems.

resumo -No Brasil, assim como em outras partes do mundo, a preocupação com o bem-estar dos peixes encontra-se em seus passos iniciais. O bem-estar de peixes, se comparado com o bemestar de outras espécies de animais de produção, é um tópico praticamente ausente para consumidores, produtores e legislação vigente. Porém, as evidências anatômicas, fisiológicas, comportamentais, evolutivas e farmacológicas sugerem que os peixes experimentam sentimentos como dor, medo e outros de maneira similar aos demais vertebrados. Isso sugere que os peixes têm potencialmente a capacidade de sofrer e apresentar outros sentimentos, ou seja, que os peixes são seres sencientes. Esta revisão teve como objetivo discutir aspectos referentes à dor e à presença de consciência nos peixes, visando colaborar com o entendimento da senciência nesses animais. Uma vez reconhecida a senciência em peixes, estes animais são incluí-dos nas considerações éticas acerca de não serem submetidos a sofrimento. palavras-chave: Senciência; cognição; consciên-cia; dor; teleósteo.abstract -In Brazil, as well as in other parts of the World, the concern about fish welfare is in its initials steps. Fish welfare, if compared to the welfare of other species of farm animals, is practically an absent topic for consumers, producers and current law. However, anatomic, physiologic, behavioral, evolutive and pharmacologic evidences suggest that fish experience feelings such as pain, fear and others, in ways that are similar to other vertebrates. This suggests that fish are potentially capable of experiencing suffering and other feelings; in other words, that fish are sentient. The objective of this review was to discuss pain and consciousness in fish, in order to collaborate with sentience understanding in these animals. Once fishes are recognized as sentient beings, these animals are then included into ethical considerations regarding the avoidance of suffering infliction.

RESUMOO objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a eficiência do hidrolisado do resíduo de sardinha como atrativo alimentar para o jundiá (Rhamdia quelen), comparando sua escolha em relação à de outros atrativos. Foram realizados dois experimentos: no primeiro, as substâncias foram inoculadas diretamente na água do aquário e, no segundo, incluídas em pellets de ágar. No experimento 1, a inoculação das substâncias (hidrolisado de sardinha, extrato de músculo de tilápia e água destilada) na água não afetou a distribuição dos peixes entre os compartimentos. No experimento 2, a maior proporção dos peixes entrou primeiro no compartimento contendo os atrativos (hidrolisado de sardinha, extrato de músculo de tilápia e ácido glutâmico). Não foi encontrada diferença na distribuição dos peixes entre os compartimentos quando dois atrativos foram avaliados simultaneamente. Os pellets contendo extrato de músculo foram ingeridos primeiro e em maior quantidade em relação aos que continham água destilada. A avaliação dos atrativos em pellets mostrou que o hidrolisado de resíduo de sardinha é eficiente como atrativo alimentar para o jundiá. Não houve diferença na escolha em relação aos outros atrativos. A inclusão das substâncias em pellets é uma metodologia válida na avaliação de diferentes atrativos.Palavras-chave: atratividade; hidrólise enzimática; preferência alimentar; Rhamdia quelen CHOICE OF SARDINE HYDROLYZATE AS FOOD ATTRACTIVE BY SILVER CATFISH ABSTRACTThis work aimed to evaluate the efficiency of sardine waste hydrolyzate as food attractive for silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen), comparing such choice to others attractives. Two experiments were performed, on the first the substances were inoculated direct in the water of the fish tank and on the second they were included in agar pellets. In the experiment 1, the inoculation of the substances (sardine waste hydrolysate, tilapia muscle extract and distillated water) in the water did not affect the distribution of fish among the compartments. In the experiment 2, most fish entered first into the compartment that contained the attractives (sardine waste hydrolysate, tilapia muscle extract and glutamic acid). No difference was found on the distribution of fish among compartments when two attractives were evaluated simultaneously. The pellets containing muscle extract were ingested first and in higher quantities comparing to distillated water. The evaluation of attractives in pellets has revealed that the sardine waste hydrolysate is efficient as food attractive for silver catfish. There was no choice difference related to others attractives. The inclusion of substances in pellets is a valid methodology on the evaluation of different attractives.
