Insight Into Health Care Services: A Characterization of Emergency Room Visits and Economic Hazards in the United States

Abstract: Hospital administrators and health policy-makers need to work in conjunction to focus efforts on public safety as a key objective in the delivery of emergency medical care. One crucial effort that hospital administrators need to focus on is improving emergency room capacity and efficiency as part of the disaster preparedness plan (Disaster Med Public Health Prep. 2018; page 1 of 6).

“…Importantly, our findings confirm a longstanding assertion that county socio‐economic composition conditions/influences citizen's socio‐economic prospects and quality of life (Jensen et al, 2017; Volaco et al, 2018; Zell et al, 2018). Socio‐economic status plays a major role in determining health status and is associated with a wide range of health outcomes, with socio‐economic status increases associated with an increase in health benefits (Hamadi et al, 2018; Hamadi, Apatu, et al, 2019; Hamadi, Spaulding, et al, 2019; Mac McCullough & Leider, 2017). Although not the sole predictor of health, a county's wealth is key in determining the length and quality of life in the county.…”

“…To account for shared knowledge and resources of care, we included the percent of hospitals that are part of a larger health system. To account for competition, we included the Herfindahl– Hershman Index (Hamadi, Apatu, et al, 2019; Hamadi, Spaulding, et al, 2019). For socio‐economic characteristics not included in the socio‐economic County Health Ranking domain, we accounted for the average (2010–2013) population per 10,000 and the population 65 years of age and older per 10,000.…”

“…Poor patient flow can cause a stressful environment alongside negative consequences for all involved stakeholders. An example consists of emergency department crowding which has been demonstrated to decrease quality of care received, cause patients to leave without being assisted, cause the care facility to lose money, and compromise community trust (Hamadi et al, 2019;Haraden & Resar, 2004;Momeni et al, 2018). Negative patient flow severely damages the patient experience and the provider experience.…”
