Insecticidal reduction of Potato leafroll virus transmission by Myzus persicae

Abstract: Esfenvalerate, imidacloprid, methamidophos, oxamyl, pymetrozine and thiamethoxam were tested for their potential to reduce the transmission of Potato leafroll virus (PLRV) by Myzus persicae. In acquisition experiments exposing virus-free aphids to insecticide residues on virus source plants during a 2-day acquisition access period, subsequent transmission of PLRV to untreated indicator plants declined significantly with increasing dosage for all insecticides. At the highest dosages, PLRV transmission was reduc… Show more

“…This pest is distributed worldwide and accounts for a large percentage of plant economic losses (Blackman and Eastop, 2000). M. persicae nicotianae causes direct damage by feeding on plant sap and spreads a variety of secondary pathogens and plant viruses like other aphids, resulting in serious losses (Gray and Gildow, 2003;Mowry, 2005).…”

“…Plants infected with PLRV during the growing season can produce tubers displaying tuber net necrosis, ranging from a slight reduction in crop value to complete crop loss. Control of net necrosis by growers involves the application of insecticides to control aphids that vector PLRV, with green peach aphid (Myzus persicae) being the most efficient and important aphid vector (Mowry 2005). Use of potato cultivars resistant to PLRV would contribute to sustainability in potato production by reducing insecticide applications during the growing season and by increasing potato seed quality through reduced PLRV infection.…”
