Tribolium castaneum merupakan salah satu hama gudang penting di negara tropis. Fumigasi menggunakan fosfin adalah upaya pengendalian yang paling umum dilakukan. Namun, penggunaan fosfin secara terus-menerus dalam waktu lama telah mengakibatkan terjadinya resistensi. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mempelajari efek fumigan dan repelen fraksi-fraksi minyak pepermin Mentha piperita terhadap T. castaneum, serta mengidentifikasi senyawa-senyawa yang terkandung di dalam fraksi aktifnya. Penelitian dilakukan di Laboratorium Entomologi Seameo Biotrop Bogor dan di Pusat Laboratorium Forensik Mabes Polri Jakarta sejak Januari hingga Oktober 2016. Minyak pepermin didestilasi dari daun M. piperita. Minyak pepermin difraksinasi dengan teknik partisi pelarut menggunakan pelarut n-heksana, etil asetat, dan metanol. Ketiga fraksi diuji sebagai fumigan dan repelen terhadap T. castaneum. Fraksi aktif dianalisis senyawa kimianya menggunakan GC-MS. Fraksi n-heksana pepermin (FHP) merupakan fraksi yang aktif terhadap mortalitas imago dan larva T. castaneum. Nilai LC 95 FHP untuk imago dan larva berturut-turut sebesar 1,92 % dan 9,43 %. Konsentrasi sublethal FHP juga menunjukkan aktivitas menghambat perkembangan larva. Persentase larva berhasil menjadi pupa berkisar 48,67-74,91 %, sedangkan yang berhasil menjadi imago berkisar 9,12-16,59 %. FHP memiliki aktifitas repelen terhadap imago T. castaneum mencapai 86,7 % pada 72 jam setelah perlakuan (JSP). Senyawa dominan pada FHP antara lain β-pinen, limonen, isopulegol, menton, isomenton, mentol, pulegon, dan trans-carane. FHP atau senyawa-senyawa yang dikandungnya berpotensi untuk dikembangkan sebagai insektisida nabati.

Objectives The majority of research performed on cellular stress and apoptosis focuses on mitochondrial dysfunction; however, the importance of the endoplasmic reticulum dysfunction and the link to metabolic diseases has gained a substantial interest. This review focuses on the potential of terpenoids to influence endoplasmic reticulum stress and the possible role terpenoids play as the treatment of metabolic diseases. Key findings Metabolic diseases develop as a result of a cascade of cellular pathways. In most cases, cells are able to compensate for the disruption of the cellular homeostasis although the initiation of response pathways; however, chronic stress initiates apoptotic pathways. This reviewed (1) showed the importance of phytoterpenoids to influence endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and homeostasis, (2) showed how regulating ER stress affect the cell survival and death, and (3) highlighted some examples of how the progression of metabolic diseases can be influenced by ER. Summary Due to the substantial number of terpenoids that have been identified in literature, this review gave examples of 21 terpenoids that have been documented to have an effect on the different proteins associated with ER stress, how these plant terpenoids influence ER dysfunction and metabolic diseases such as diabetes, cancer, liver, and neurological diseases and parasitic infections.

Linoleic Acid-Menthyl Ester Reduces the Secretion of Apolipoprotein B100 in HepG2 Cells

The effect of linoleic acid-menthyl ester (LAME) on lipid metabolism were assessed in HepG2 cells. It is well known that high level of apolipoprotein (apo) B100 in the serum is risk for atherosclerosis. Although linoleic acid (LA) treatment and LA plus L-mentol treatment increased apo B100 secretion, LAME treatment significantly decreased apo B100 secretion in HepG2 cells compared with control medium. The hypolipidemic effect of LAME was attributable to the suppression of triglyceride synthesis in HepG2 cells. It is also known that the risk of coronary heart disease is negatively related to the concentration of serum apo A-1. In the present study, LAME treatment increased apo A-1 secretion as compared with LA treatment in HepG2 cells. These results suggest that mentyl-esterification of fatty acids may be beneficial in anti-atherogenic dietary therapy.
