Abstract The overuse of synthetic pesticide, a consequence of the rush to increase crop production, led to tremendous adverse effects, as they constitute a major pollutant for both soils and water, with a high toxicity towards humans and animals and, at the same time, led to development of pest resistance. In the last period, the researches were directed towards finding new solutions with a lower toxicity, less damaging behaviour towards the environment, and a better specificity of action. In this context, the use of essential oils, a complex and unique mixture of compounds, can be considered for the next-generation pesticides. This review aims to present the main applications of the essential oils as insecticides, herbicides, acaricides, and nematicides, as they emerged from the scientific literature published in the last 5 years (2015 to present). From the identified articles within the time period, only those dealing with essential oils obtained by the authors (not commercially available) were selected to be inserted in the review, characterized using established analytical techniques and employed for the envisaged applications. The review is concluded with a chapter containing the main conclusions of the literature study and the future perspectives, regarding the application of essential oils as next-generation pesticides.

Essential oils are compounds produced by secondary plant metabolites and are found in leaf trichomes, moreover, they are characteristic because they present strong odors and present biological activities. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the insecticidal action of Mesosphaerum suaveolens essential oil against nymphs of Nauphoeta cinerea as well as to characterize the chemical constituents present in it. The EO was extracted by means of hydrodistillation and its chemical characterization was done by Gas Chromatography coupled to Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS). For the biological assay against cockroaches, nymphs of 20 days old were selected for which they were submitted to different concentrations (50 - 1000 μg/mL oil per air) and mortality was evaluated over 48 hours of EO exposure. As a positive control, ethanol (C2H6O) was used. Have been identified 44 compounds in EO, with β-Caryophyllene (18.57%), sabinene (15.94%) and spatulenol (11.09%) being the major compounds of EO. This showed no activity against the nymphs at any of the concentrations, whereas the positive control caused mortality at all concentrations tested. Thus, the essential oil of M. suaveolens does not present insecticidal properties in low concentrations against the cockroach.

Background: The use of synthetic insecticides is responsible for many cases of resistance in insects. Therefore, the use of natural molecules of ecological interest with insecticidal properties turns out to be an alternative approach to the use of synthetic insecticides. This study aims at investigating the larvicidal, adulticidal activity and the chemical composition of the essential oil of Aeollanthus pubescens Benth on the major malaria vector Anopheles gambiae.The leaves of Aeollanthus pubescens were collected in the South of the Republic of Benin.Methods: Three reference strains of Anopheles gambiae s.s. such as Kisumu, Kiskdr and Acerkis were used. The standard WHO guideline for larvicides evaluation was used and the chemical composition of the essential oil was analysed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. Adult mosquitoes were exposed to the fragment nets coated with the essential oil for 3 min. Probit regression analysis was used for LC50 , LC95 , KDT50 , and KDT95 calculations. The difference between the mortality‐dose regressions for the different strains was analysed using the likelihood ratio test (LRT). The Log-rank test was performed to evaluate the difference in survival between the strains.Results: Fourteen components were identified representing 98.31% of the total of oil. The major components were carvacrol (51.06 %), thymyle acetate (14.01 %) and ɣ-terpinene (10.60 %). The essential oil has remarkable larvicidal properties with LC50 of 29.57, 22.95, and 28.37 ppm respectively on Kisumu, Acerkis and Kiskdr strains. With the fragment net treated at 165 µg/cm2, the KDT50 of both Acerkis (1.71 s, p < 0.001) and Kiskdr (2.67 s, p < 0.001) individuals were significantly lower than that of Kisumu (3.77 s). The lifespan of the three mosquito strains decreased respectively to one day for Kisumu (p < 0.001), two days for Acerkis (p < 0.001) and three days for Kiskdr (p < 0.001) compared to their control.Conclusion: Our findings show that the Aeollanthus pubescens essential oil is an efficient larvicide and adulticide against malaria vector Anopheles gambiae. This bioinsecticidal activity is a promising discovery for the control of the resistant malaria-transmitting vectors.
