Insecticidal activity of garlic essential oil and their constituents against the mealworm beetle, Tenebrio molitor Linnaeus (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae)

Abstract: This study evaluated the insecticidal activity of garlic, Allium sativum Linnaeus (Amaryllidaceae) essential oil and their principal constituents on Tenebrio molitor. Garlic essential oil, diallyl disulfide, and diallyl sulfide oil were used to compare the lethal and repellent effects on larvae, pupae and adults of T. molitor. Six concentrations of garlic essential oil and their principal constituents were topically applied onto larvae, pupae and adults of this insect. Repellent effect and respiration rate of … Show more

“…Insects treated with distilled water were used as a control. Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) production (µL CO 2 h −1 insect −1 ) was measured with a TR3C CO 2 analyzer (Sable System International, Las Vegas, NV, USA) using methods adapted from previous studies . An adult of H. hampei (female or male) was placed in each respirometry chamber (25 mL) connected to a closed system.…”

“…Changes in walking patterns occur as a result of the action of toxic compounds on the nervous system, which either stimulate or reduce insect mobility. Various insect pests show altered behavioral responses when exposed to insecticides; insects are reported to leave toxic environments as soon as they detect toxic compounds . Studies show that synthetic insecticides can disrupt recognition of the host substrate, influencing the olfactory orientation and walking behavior of insects .…”

“…Because we determined the LC 50 value of borax of larvae as 3.402,15 ppm and 28.512,5 ppm for adults. Our results showed compatibility with [28]'s study. They studied insecticidal activity of garlic essential oil and their constituents against to T.…”

“…Consequently, impairing the function of such enzymes can reduce the likelihood of pest resistance to essential oils [114]. Furthermore, histological changes in the epithelial cells of insects' midguts [115], and even a diminution in the respiration rate of pests have also been reported [116]. Generally, because of the wide pesticidal effects and several modes of action of the essential oils and their derivatives, pests have very few changes to resistant before these safe agents, and therefore they are very valuable in pest management strategies.…”
