Insecta, Hymenoptera, Bethylidae: range extension and filling gaps in Madagascar

Abstract: Bethylidae are cosmopolitan wasps, with about 100 valid genera and about 2,400 valid species around the world, with 39 genera recorded from the Afrotropical region. This study aimed to determine the genera of Bethylidae occurring in Madagascar. The specimens were collected in Madagascar with several traps. A total of 18,915 specimens were obtained and 27 genera recognized. Nine of them are already recorded from Madagascar: Epyris, Glenosema, Goniozus Laelius, Pilomesitius Pristocera, Rhabdepyris, Sclerodermus,… Show more

“…The California Academy of Sciences' (CAS) Terrestrial Arthropod Inventory of Madagascar Project (2000)(2001)(2002)(2003)(2004)(2005)(2006)(2007)(2008)(2009) was conducted to address the need for taxonomic exploration of the arthropod fauna. This project has yielded a plethora of arthropod specimens for many taxonomic studies (e.g., Mugrabi and Azevedo, 2010;Krishnankutty and Dietrich, 2011;Álvarez-Padilla et al, 2012), and has yielded more than 3000 specimens of Reduviidae, or assassin bugs.…”

“…Prorops was recorded from Madagascar by Mugrabi & Azevedo (2011) at the generic level, but species occurring in the area were not listed. Here, we describe two new species from Madagascar and record P. nasuta Waterson for the first time from the island.…”

“…Subsequently, Formosiepyris rugulosus Xu & He, 2005 was described from Fujian Province, China, (Xu and He 2005). While all of these species are distributed in the Oriental region, Mugrabi and Azevedo (2010) and Azevedo et al (2010) recorded several unidentified species of Formosiepyris in the United Arab Emirates and Madagascar, implying that the distribution and diversity of this genus require clarification.…”
