Inquiry-Based Science Education as a Revision Strategy

Abstract: The research aim was to identify the effect of revising the thematic unit “Changes in Chemical Reactions” using IBSE (based on confirmation inquiry) in the 8th grade of secondary school. This thematic unit is taught in chemistry lessons in the 2nd term of the 7th grade. A set of activities verified by a piece of pilot research was used to implement IBSE based on confirmation inquiry using the 5E Educational Model. The research was performed in ten Slovak secondary schools during the 1st term of the 2017/2018 s… Show more

“…It was thought that this would help prevent their incorrect knowledge and support their learning process because students are known to have difficulty making sense of concepts due to proactive inhibition (Tumanggor et al, 2020). However, activities used in the research contributed to an effective teaching environment as well as a scientifically proper construction of the concepts after the application by employing various teach-ISSN 1648-3898 /Print/ ISSN 2538-7138 /Online/ ing techniques (Sotáková et al, 2020). Thus, it is believed that appropriate and effective teaching helps properly transmitting knowledge to a higher level, just as this research did (Okur & Artun, 2016).…”

“…In the upcoming steps of the process, students would deepen their knowledge by getting into an inquiry cycle. Conceptual understanding would take place at this point (Sotáková et al, 2020) because it can take place only when students' process-ISSN 1648-3898 /Print/ ISSN 2538-7138 /Online/ related skills are developed and all steps of inquiry-based learning are completed. As such, students who have the skills to scientifically explain phenomena could be reached (Mutlu, 2020).…”

“… 22 28 In the area of chemical education, the main innovation consisted of the introduction of data logging devices (Vernier and CMA equipment 29 , 30 ) integrated with the inquiry-based approach. 31 34 Project participants (60 secondary schools, 24 gymnasiums, and six secondary technical schools) were equipped with proper systems, and teachers were trained in using those in Summer 2019. During the training, data logging devices were introduced, and chemistry teachers practiced their use in the school chemistry curriculum context.…”

“…That is, if children are able to acquire direct experience through practice, they will have a deeper understanding of the knowledge of science (National Research Council, 2012). Inquiry learning can be ISSN 1648-3898 /Print/ ISSN 2538-7138 /Online/ designed with hands-on science activities to enhance learners' interest and curiosity (Bulunuz, 2012;Eshach et al, 2011;Sotakova et al, 2020). Nonetheless, in Taiwan, many curricular activities in early childhood education still focus on children's acquisition of knowledge and neglect the necessary inquiry process (Liu, 2017).…”
