InP membrane integrated photonics research

Abstract: Recently a novel photonic integration technology, based on a thin InP-based membrane, is emerging. This technology offers monolithic integration of active and passive functions in a sub-micron thick membrane. The enhanced optical confinement in the membrane results in ultracompact active and passive devices. The membrane also enables approaches to converge with electronics. It has shown high potential in breaking the speed, energy and density bottlenecks in conventional photonic integration technologies. This … Show more

“…However, in the standard substrate-based InP platform, there are no small bend radii of the waveguides. The waveguide radii similar to those of the SOI platform can be achieved on the novel InP membrane platform [ 45 ], which is currently under development and appears promising for full integration of the considered sensing system. Alternatively, the hybrid integration of InP elements could be used to overcome this problem.…”

“…he InP-membrane-on-Si (IMOS) platform is promising for the integration of nano-photonics with high performance active devices [1]. In the IMOS platform, various of active and passive devices, like lasers, photodiodes, modulators, and polarization converters (PCs), are demonstrated [2]. For the next level up with single chip implementations for fibre sensor interrogators, optical imaging systems and PON transceivers, optical circulators are needed in the IMOS platform.…”
