Hay production is the most common form of forage conservation methods for horse feeding. However, haylage can be an alternative to hay. The present research assessed the nutritional value of Tifton-85 haylage by fermentation pattern, bromatological composition, and apparent digestibility compared to hay in the diet of Quarter Horse mares. Haylage was prepared with 700.0 g of dry matter (DM) kg-1 added with a biological inoculum and was assessed at 1, 3, 7, 14, 28, and 56 days of production. At 14 days, the protein content had decreased from 192.0 to 173.2 g kg-1 DM. The opposite was found for ammoniacal nitrogen, which rose from 0.61 to 1.14 g kg-1 DM of total nitrogen. No differences were found for the variables NDF, ADF, hemicellulose, pH, acetic acid, propionic acid and butyric acid, whose values were 734.3, 316.5 and 416.9 g kg-1 DM, pH 5.47 and 0.06, 0.003, 0.03 g kg-1 DM, respectively. Lactic acid contents were higher after 28 days of haylage production, reaching 2.39 g kg-1 DM at the last assessment. The contents of aflatoxins, fumonisin, and zearalenone in the plant were similar to those in the haylage at 0.95 µg kg-1, 0.60 mg kg-1, and 0.71 µg kg-1, respectively. The digestibility assay showed an increase in protein digestibility in the diet with haylage (675.1 g kg-1 DM) compared to hay (579.1 g kg-1 DM) of the same grass. Haylage can potentially be used to feed horses and its use is recommended starting at 28 days of production.

RESUMO -O experimento foi conduzido para avaliar a degradação ruminal de matéria seca (MS), proteína bruta (PB) e fibra em detergente neutro (FDN) de silagens de capim-elefante submetido a emurchecimento ou à adição de 0, 7, 14, 21 ou 28% de farelo de cacau (FC) durante a ensilagem. Amostras de cada silagem foram incubadas no rúmen de três vacas holandesas por períodos de 0, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72, 96, 120 e 144 horas. A inclusão do farelo de cacau reduziu o potencial de degradação da MS, que foi maior nas silagens com capim emurchecido e não-emurchecido. A degradabilidade potencial da PB e da FDN, no entanto, apresentou pequenas variações e os valores médios situaram-se próximos de 80 e 46%, respectivamente. Considerando a taxa de passagem de 5%/hora, todas as silagens apresentaram elevada degradabilidade efetiva da PB (acima de 55%). Embora as estimativas da degradação ruminal das silagens com farelo de cacau tenham apresentado tendência de redução, todas as silagens apresentaram degradabilidade potencial da MS e da PB acima de 65 e 75%, respectivamente. A adição de farelo de cacau ao capim-elefante pode ser uma alternativa para rápida e abundante disponibilidade de nutrientes para o sistema ruminal.Palavras-chave: degradação in situ, forrageira, incubação ruminal, Pennisetum purpureum, subproduto, Theobroma cacao L. Ruminal degradation of silage of elephantgrass wilted or with different levels of cocoa mealABSTRACT -The experiment was conducted to evaluate dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) ruminal degradation of elephantgrass silages wilted under the sun light for eight hours or with addition of 0, 7, 14, 21, and 28% of cocoa meal (CM) at the ensiling. Samples of each silage type were incubated in the rumen of three Holstein cows for 0, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72, 96, 120, and 144 hours. The CM inclusion reduced the degradation potential of DM, which showed greater values for silages without CM (wilted or non-wilted). The CP and NDF potential degradability showed small variations, with mean values near 80 and 46%, respectively. Considering a passage rate of 5%/h, all silages showed high CP effective degradability (over 55%). Although the ruminal degradation estimate for silages with CM showed a reduction tendency, all silages presented DM and CP potential degradability over 65 and 75%, respectively. The CM addition to elephantgrass can be considered an alternative that offers a fast and abundant availability of nutrients to the ruminal system.

RESUMOO objetivo foi avaliar as características agronômicas e químico-bromatológicas de dois híbridos de milho Bt (30F35H e CD397YH) ensilados com inoculante enzimobacteriano. Os teores de FDN foram semelhantes para todas as frações de planta, já o teor de FDA diferiu quanto à planta inteira e colmo, enquanto a lignina diferiu em relação à planta inteira, colmo e sabugo. A DIVMS não apresentou diferença entre os híbridos em nenhuma das frações. As silagens foram produzidas em silos experimentais (aproximadamente 200kg). As concentrações de MS, EE, FDN, NDT e DIVMS não mostraram diferença entre as silagens dos híbridos avaliados. Já os teores de MM, PB, FDA e lignina diferiram. Não houve diferença entre as silagens dos híbridos para os valores de NDT estimado e para a DIVMS. Também não foi observado efeito do inoculante sobre os valores de CHT, CNF, FDN e DIVMS. Conclui-se que o híbrido Pioneer foi superior ao Coodetec em produtividade de MV ha -1 , porém a composição nutricional das silagens não diferiu na concentração de NDT e digestibilidade avaliadas em ovinos. Não houve efeito do uso de inoculante na digestibilidade da matéria seca e da fração fibra em detergente neutro das silagens.Palavras-chave: aditivo, composição nutricional, digestibilidade, forragem conservada ABSTRACT The aim was to evaluate the agronomic characteristics and chemical composition of the two corn hybrids (30F35H and CD397YH) ensiled with enzymatic bacterial inoculants. NDF were similar for all plant fractions, since the ADF content differed as to the whole plant and stem, lignin differed in relation to the whole plant, stem and cob. IVDMD did not differ among treatments in any of the fractions. The silages were produced in experimental silos (approximately 200kg). The concentrations of MS, EE, NDF, IVDMD and TDN showed no difference between the silages of hybrids. Since the levels of MM, CP, ADF and lignin differed; there was no difference between hybrids for silage TDN and IVDMD. There was also no effect of the use of inoculants on the values of CHT, NFC, NDF and IVDMD. It is concluded that Pioneer was superior to Coodetec productivity of MV-1 ha.
