“…Regarding cargo capacity, Gruber et al [25] suggested a value of 100 kg for the capacity on electric bicycles in Germany, whereas [31] revealed the existence of a weight limitation of 60 kg for shipments on electric-assisted bicycles in England. However, Schier et al [45], in their survey of last mile distribution in urban areas, consider that electric-assisted bicycles and tricycles can carry between 50 and 250 kg. In the case analyzed by Sadhu et al [23], in New Delhi, up to 195 kg on human-powered bicycles can be transported per trip.…”

“…There are now an abundance of cycle couriers in many major cities with Deliveroo having over 15,000 registered riders in the UK alone, making it a more attractive alternative for carriers (Business of Apps, 2019). With e-bikes capable of transporting loads of between 50-250 kg up to 80km on a single charge (Schier et al, 2016), estimates suggest that 25-50% of current freight traffic destined for urban centres could be transferred from motorised vehicles to e-bikes under the right conditions (Lenz and Riehle, 2013;Cyclelogistics, 2014;Schliwa et al, 2015;Wrighton and Reiter, 2016;Melo and Baptista, 2017). A wide range of e-bike styles are available but depending on their size, weight and power output, may be subject to motor vehicle regulations which can restrict where they can be used.…”

“…Technologically, electric cargo-bikes can currently be utilized for deliveries, and this becomes even more plausible with more advanced battery capacities. According to Schier et al [30], electric bicycles, tricycles, or quadracycles are capable of transporting 50-250 kg of cargo, and battery capacities allow for transport ranges of up to 50-80 km. Gruber et al [31] showed that the substitution of electric cargo-bikes takes over 19% to 48% of the distances carried by regular trucks.…”

“…The battery capacity for the cargo-bikes also needs to be considered. The battery mounted on electric cargo-bikes can last for about 50 to 80 km [30]. However, considering how lithium ion batteries deteriorate and how rider fatigue increases, we have set the battery capacity to 20 km.…”
