A Courier Service with Electric Bicycles in an Urban Area: The Case in Seoul

Abstract: Various factors must be considered when running a courier service in an urban area, because the infrastructure of a city differs from those in suburban or countryside areas. Of note, population density is higher, and vehicles encounter greater restrictions. Moreover, air pollution from fossil fuel combustion is more severe. As tailpipe emissions are becoming costly to both corporations and the environment, researchers are increasingly exploring more appealing transportation options. Electric bicycles have beco… Show more

“…In addition to the financial benefits, the user participation-based rebalancing service provides sustainable benefits as well. According to Lee et al [18], 1 liter of diesel emits 2.6 kg of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and the efficiency of a 1-ton truck is 7.5 kilometers per liter, resulting in 0.34 kg of CO 2 per kilometer. Assuming that 36 1-ton trucks travel about 200 km a day for 24 h, 900 tons of CO 2 are generated annually.…”

“…Ni and Yu (2011) analyzed the environmental effects of US service trade exports and pointed out that service trade exports can reduce carbon monoxide, non-methane organic volatiles, and nitrogen oxide pollution emissions [15]. Lee et al (2019) showed that the route optimization of urban express delivery services can reduce pollution emissions based on South Korean research, which verified the correlation between the service industry and pollution emissions [16].…”
