Innovations in Forest Bioeconomy: A Bibliometric Analysis

Abstract: Innovations are a key component of the forest bioeconomy. Many types of innovations are needed for an efficient forest bioeconomy to be deployed. This article aimed to analyze the scientific literature on the topic of innovations in the forest bioeconomy, to understand where we are and where we are likely to be in the future, considering technologies, business models, etc. First, the scientific literature, in the form of peer-reviewed articles indexed in the Web of Science, was compiled in a comprehensive data… Show more

“…The number of published scientific studieson innovations in forest bioeconomy increased between 2010 and 2021. However, most of these publications focus on Europe and North America, with around 80% of the publications, while South America has a small representativeness of about 6% on the topic [45]. Thus, it is important to synthesize the available information on the forest bioeconomy for underrepresented countries, such as Brazil, and global regions.…”

“…Bugge et al's [27] well-known classification of bio-technology, bioecology, and bio-resource research visions was recently complemented by Piplani and Smith-Hall's [5] framework for analyzing the forest-based bioeconomy, which distinguishes between five schools of thought: the biotechnology, techno-bioresource, socio-bioresource, eco-efficiency, and eco-society. Jankovský et al [28] review the scientific literature on the topic of innovations in the forest bioeconomy, finding that most studies dealt with the necessary adaptation of policies, while innovations were mainly focused on biorefining, biotechnology, and production of various biomaterials, as well as innovations of business models and stakeholder interactions.…”
