Innovation persistence in times of crisis: an analysis of Italian firms

Abstract: This paper investigates the extent to which innovation persistence unfolds in "times of crisis". By combining the extant literature with recent research on innovation along the downturn of business cycles, we expect that persistence hardly emerges in these times and that it is affected by the public support received by firms and by their business strategies. Drawing on the last three waves (2005)(2006)(2007)(2008)(2009)(2010)(2011)(2012)(2013) of the MET survey on Italian firms, we find that innovation persist… Show more

“…The insights of this study yield several contributions to the literature on innovation management in times of crises and patent analytics in innovation management (e.g., Döner, 2017; Jung et al, 2018; Tietze et al, 2020; Antonioli and Montresor, 2019). We show that decision makers can use patent information and analytics to find data‐driven innovation management solutions to overcome crisis situations, as in the COVID‐19 pandemic.…”

“…The most recent literature investigated firms' innovation behavior during the GFC 2008/2009 (Antonioli & Montresor, 2021;Archibugi et al, 2013a, b;Filippetti & Archibugi, 2011;Paunov, 2012). Archibugi et al (2013a) examining panel data from 2500 British firms, found that firms classified as great innovator are more likely to increase innovation during the crisis (but not before) and thus supporting the case of creative accumulation.…”

“…Empirical research has shown that, at the macro level, countries with a stronger innovation system have been more resilient to the recent crisis (Filippetti and Archibugi 2011), and also that, at the micro level, innovative firms have outperformed less innovative ones during the crisis both in terms of further innovative investments (Archibugi et al 2013;Antonioli and Montresor 2019;Antonioli et al 2013) and labour demand (Ortiz and Salas Fumás 2020). This research suggests the presence of a link between innovation, as the result of a long-term accumulation of capabilities, and the short-term economic performance in response to a major shock.…”
