PurposeThe textile industry is a labor-intensive industry in which where innovation-oriented studies are conducted intensively. However, identifying potential innovation gaps for a firm operating in the textile industry is not easy and greatly influences the firm's future success. To this end, this study aims to propose a novel integrated approach for the pre-assessment of the firm-level innovation process.Design/methodology/approachThe proposed approach uses two important tools: the technology capability audit tool and innovation audit tool. The proposed approach integrates these tools to discover possible innovation opportunities for firms. The proposed approach is called the innovation gap finder model (IGFM).FindingsA real case study in the textile industry is conducted to show how IGFM works in practice. The results of this study show that decision-makers can easily identify existing innovation gaps using IGFM.Originality/valueFirms must first identify innovation gaps in order to initiate achievable projects in line with their current situation. Addressing a firm-level pre-assessment of the textile innovation process helps achieve growth and enables the firm to know what it should do in the near future. By identifying innovation gaps by considering the innovation processes at the firm level, it is also easier to prepare an action plan on what and how to do in accordance with the firm's own culture. There is no specific tool developed to discover potential innovation gaps in the literature. To fill this gap, a novel integrated approach is proposed for a pre-assessment of firm level innovation process in this study. The proposed approach can also accelerate the establishment of the “idea-invention-innovation” path within the firm.

The textile and clothing industry is moving away from its traditional roots in an attempt to revive the fortunes of this mature industry, through the adoption of novel technologies. Digital Prototypes are used as an essential tool in the modern design process. The integration can speed up the design process and affect competition be-tween companies. Typical applications are digital textile and fashion design, pattern generation to custom-design clothing, fitting evaluation, style editing, and virtual try-on. However, new product developments in textiles and clothing have widened our views of the world and must also be covered. The ever-growing spectrum of smart textiles and wearable technologies has the potential to take the textile industry in a completely new & sustainable direction, far beyond its traditional roots. The integration of smart functionality into clothing and other textile products into the digital prototype is essential in order to alter our relationship with them and the way we use them.

Ο κλάδος Κλωστοϋφαντουργίας και Ένδυσης (ΚΥ&Ε) είναι από τους πρώτους βιομηχανικούς τομείς που επηρεάστηκαν σημαντικά από την παγκοσμιοποίηση της παραγωγής και των υπηρεσιών. Η βιομηχανία της μόδας οδηγείται προς μια διαρκώς επιταχυνόμενη μόδα που προσφέρει τα προϊόντα της γρηγορότερα, φθηνότερα και σε μεγαλύτερη αφθονία από ποτέ. Η απαίτηση αυτή έχει ως αποτέλεσμα την αναζήτηση νέων τεχνικών που θα προσφέρουν στην διαδικασία ανάπτυξης προϊόντων. Η παρούσα έρευνα έχει ως αντικείμενο την μελέτη και αποδοχή του ψηφιακού πρωτοτύπου ως μέσο επικοινωνίας και σύντμησης του χρόνου ανάπτυξης του προϊόντος χωρίς προβλήματα, μειώνοντας το τεχνολογικό χάσμα και τον χρόνο παραγωγής, αυξάνοντας παράλληλα τη δημιουργικότητα και την άμεση οπτικοποίηση του ρούχου και της εφαρμογής του. Το ψηφιακό πρωτότυπο έχει γίνει αποδεκτό στις εφαρμογές ηλεκτρομηχανολογικών προϊόντων και πολλές μελέτες έχουν αναδείξει την βέλτιστη εκμετάλλευση των δυνατοτήτων των νέων τεχνολογιών και τα προβλήματα από την ενοποίησή του στην όλη διαδικασία ανάπτυξης. Στον τομέα της ΚΥ&Ε η έρευνα κατευθύνεται προς την ανάπτυξη λύσεων σχεδιομελέτης ώστε να προκύψει ένα ικανοποιητικό μοντέλο ψηφιακού πρωτοτύπου που θα μπορούσε να ενοποιηθεί στις υπάρχουσες σχεδιαστικές λύσεις. Σκοπός της έρευνας είναι να αναδείξει τις απαιτήσεις ενοποίησης και αποτελεσματικής χρήσης του ψηφιακού τρισδιάστατου μοντέλου στη διαδικασία της μόδας μέσω εκτε- ταμένης έρευνας ακαδημαϊκών, παρόχων λογισμικού, χρηστών, σχεδιαστών και ειδικών προϊόντων ένδυσης.
