a b s t r a c tFour strains of N-hexanoyl-L-homoserine lactone (AHL)-degrading Pseudomonas spp., named PsDAHP1, PsDAHP2, PsDAHP3, and PsDAHP4 were isolated and identified from the intestine of Fenneropenaeus indicus. PsDAHP1 showed the highest AHL-degrading activity among the four isolates. PsDAHP1 inhibited biofilm-forming exopolysaccharide and altered cell surface hydrophobicity of virulent green fluorescent protein (GFP)-tagged Vibrio parahaemolyticus DAHV2 (GFP-VpDAHV2). Oral administration of PsDAHP1 significantly reduced zebrafish mortality caused by GFP-VpDAHV2 challenge, and inhibited colonisation of GFP-VpDAHV2 in the gills and intestine of zebrafish as evidence by confocal laser scanning microscope and selective plating. Furthermore, zebrafish receiving PsDAHP1-containing feed had increased phagocytic cells of its leucocytes, increased serum activities of superoxide dismutase and lysozyme. The results suggest that Pseudomonas aeruginosa PsDAHP1 could protect zebrafish from V. parahaemolyticus infection by inhibiting biofilm formation and enhancing defence mechanisms of the fish.

In this study the effect of probiotic preparations and plant extract was investigated against eleven fish bacterial pathogens viz. Aeromonas hydrophila, Cellobiococcus sp., Enterobacter aerogenes, E. cloacae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Salmonella sp., Shigella sp., Streptobacillus sp., Streptococcus sp., Pseudomonas fluorescens and Staphylococcus aureus. All these pathogens were found to be resistant for antibiotics viz. nitrofurantoin, amoxycillin, bacitracin, cephalothin, erythromycin, novobiocin, vancomycin , amphicillin, oxacillin and colistin. In vitro antagonism test of the probiotics was performed by using well diffusion method. In case of probiotic Aquapro TM , effective zone of inhibition of 2.433 cm was observed for P. fluorescens and K. pneumoniae. The extracts of Azadirachta indica, Aloe barbadensis, Withania somnifera and Momordica charantia were studied in vitro alone as well as in combination with probiotic (Lactobacillus sporogenes). The zone of inhibition observed in mixed sample was less as compared to individual sample. Among the four plants extract, the W. somnifera extract was found to be the most effective and it leads to maximum inhibition (1.1 cm) recorded for E. aerogenes.

The effects of the isoflavone genistein and methanol extract of Basella alba leaves were evaluated in Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus on growth and immunostimulation. Adult tilapia (mean weight 39.55 g) was fed diets containing genistein (1 gm/kg) and methanol extract of B. alba (1 g/kg) for 35 days. Basella alba extract treated tilapia showed significantly higher (P<0.05) weight gain, respiratory burst, phagocytic activity, plasma protein content and plasma lysozyme activity compared to fish fed control diet. The B. alba extract treated fish showed the highest final individual mean body weight, final individual length, specific growth rate, hepatosomatic index and total immunoglobulin content. The phagocytic and respiratory burst activities of genistein treated fish were significantly higher (P <0.05) compared to the control group. The weight gain, lysozyme activity and total protein content of genistein treated fish did not differ significantly (P>0.05) from both control and B. alba treated fish. There was no significant difference (P > 0.05) in the food conversion ratio as well among the different treatment groups. The study indicates that B. alba methanol extract might positively influence the growth and protect the health status of tilapia.
