Injury Patterns among Forestry Workers in Croatia

Abstract: Timber harvesting, especially motor-manual felling, in Croatia, as in many other countries, is one of the most hazardous economic activities. Consequently, the aim of this paper is to analyse and compare the latest trends and risk factors related to the incidence of work-induced injuries in structural organization units of national forest enterprise. A combined approach of literature review and assembled secondary data was applied to gather data on workplace accidents over the years 2014–2020. Work-induced inj… Show more

“…Based on this study, there were several hot spots of H&S issues which need careful and rigid reviewing for improving OSH in the SEA region. In future, the mechanization of forest work will reduce accident rates, mainly by decreasing the share of chainsaw work in the SEA region, as proved by statistics to have occurred in other parts of the world [1,[40][41][42][43]. Before such developments will be in question, proactive safety actions are needed to be carried out.…”

“…A hazardous event is a falling tree, and the consequences can be injuries of varying severity to the logger’s musculoskeletal system ( 49 ). Loggers working outdoors are exposed to a number of different HFs, such as strong wind, inappropriate technical equipment (e.g., personal protective equipment), hygienic hazards [vibration ( 49 ), noise ( 50 )], ergonomic hazards—unnatural or uncomfortable working position ( 48 , 51 ), human factors—psychological inconsistency or health problems.…”

“…It includes the technical processes of felling, delimbing, bucking, extraction, and debarking [19]. Forest harvesting is one of the most sensitive activities compared to other sectors [20]. For this reason, the social pillar examines the impact of the working environment on the forest worker [21][22][23][24][25][26].…”
