Injectable Adhesive Hydrogel through a Microcapsule Cross-Link for Periodontitis Treatment

Abstract: In this work, chitosan (CS) decorated metronidazole (MTZ) microcapsules (CS@MTZ) were synthesized and used as a cross-linker for the preparation of a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) injectable hydrogel by dynamic covalent bonding and ionic interaction through a 4-carboxyphenylboronic acid bridge. The use of MTZ microcapsules efficiently slowed down the release rate of the hydrophilic antibiotic from the hydrogel matrix. Besides, the hydrophobicity of the microcapsules endows the PVA@CS@MTZ hydrogel to be sticky to a… Show more

“…Such systems are sensitive to the pH, counter ion/polymer ratio, and temperature. [27] For example, alginate is crosslinked by the counterion Ca 2+ , [28][29][30][31][32] and cationic residues of polypeptides can be crosslinked using anionic organophosphorus crosslinkers. [33] Some examples of oppositely charged polymer-polymer crosslinking are the ionic crosslinking of quaternized chitosan (CS) with glycerophosphate [34] or chitosan and polyglutamate.…”

“…This delivery system was quite effective in anti-inflammation and periodontium regeneration [150]. In other research, Dong et al reported a thermoresponsive injectable PVA based hydrogel to control the release rate of antibiotics [151]. The sustained release of the drug endowed a prolonged bacteriostatic ability, while Chitosan decorated metronidazole (MTZ) enhanced the injectability and bio-adhesive property of the hydrogel [151].…”

“…Dong and co-workers have prepared an injectable hydrogel system based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with metronidazole (MTZ) microcapsules (CS-MTZ) incorporated in chitosan (CS) ( Figure 6 ) [ 17 ]. To obtain a crosslinked hydrogel, they have used a dually dynamic crosslinking strategy with 4-carboxyphenylboronic acid (CPBA).…”
