Needle traces have been used for revealing historical changes in needle longevity of Pinus sylvestris L. and Picea abies (L.) H. Karst. In this paper we compared the needle-trace diameter of five conifer species [Abies sibirica Ledeb., Picea abies, Pinus sylvestris, Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco and Taxus baccata L.] in respect of needle size. In case of P. sylvestris, we studied how needle-trace diameter varied among different growing sites and among different shoots within a site, and related that variation to needle morphology and structure. Pinus sylvestris had the greatest diameter of needle traces (mean€SD=233 €30 mm) followed by T. baccata (141€19 mm) and P. menziesii (121€30 mm). The smallest needle-trace diameter was in A. sibirica (85€21 mm) and P. abies (80€18 mm). Among species, the needle-trace diameter was strongly correlated with needle length (r=0.93, P<0.05). Within P. sylvestris, the needle-trace diameter was significantly affected by location (P<0.001) and varied significantly among shoots within a location (P<0.001). The shoots of P. sylvestris which had greater average diameter of needle traces, tended to have longer (r=0.36, P<0.05), wider (r=0.55, P<0.05) and heavier (r=0.64, P<0.05) needles with greater stomatal density (r=0.55, P<0.05). Although our results do not allow the use of needle-trace diameter to predict properties of needle structure at the present stage, they nevertheless indicate general trends and point to a need for further studies.

“…Recognition of procambial traces in a section, reconstruction of the course of individual procambial traces through serial sections, and estimations of the thickness of the leaf base regions followed the procedures described previously ( Pizzolato and Sundberg, 1999 ). The disk of insertion, as defi ned by Sharman (1942) and used by two of us in an examination of growth primary axis and tassel development ( Pizzolato and Sundberg, 1999, 2001, 2002, is the proximal portion of the leaf base and the adjacent tissues of the axis which expand together if internodal growth occurs. Thickness of the presumptive leaf base regions within the reproductive zones (spikelet pair primordia and spikelet primordia) was estimated by measuring thickness of the lateral primordia from SEM micrographs.…”

The origin of polystichy in the maize ear and central tassel spike continues to challenge our understanding of evolution in this important crop species. In this paper we tested the hypothesis that the change in phyllotaxy occurs in the region of husk leaf production before the transition to reproductive growth. Young ear or presumptive ear primordia were dissected to examine the transition from distichous husk leaves below the ear through spiral phyllotaxy to the polystichous arrangement of spikelet pair primordia in the young ear. Serial transverse sections were used to document the thickness of successive disks of insertion of lateral primordia and to reconstruct the path of procambial differentiation. The transition in phyllotaxy, though variable, typically occurs in the vegetative zone and is associated with periodic heterogeneity in the thickness of leaf bases and a delay in the development of waves of procambial differentiation into the base of the young ear.
