Initial state of theDrosophilaeye before dorsoventral specification is equivalent to ventral

Abstract: Dorsoventral (DV) patterning is crucial for eye development in invertebrates and higher animals. DV lineage restriction is the primary event in undifferentiated early eye primordia of Drosophila. In Drosophila eye disc, a dorsal-specific GATA family transcription factor pannier (pnr) controls Iroquois-Complex(Iro-C) genes to establish the dorsal eye fate whereas Lobe(L), which is involved in controlling a Notch ligand Serrate(Ser), is specifically required for ventral growth. However, fate of eye disc cells be… Show more

“…It is not clear when dorsal-ventral differences are first established, as transcripts encoding the GATA family transcription factor Pannier (Pnr) are present in the dorsalmost region of the embryonic eye disc (41), but a pnr-GAL4 line does not drive UAS-GFP expression in the dorsal eye disc until early second instar (42). wg-lacZ is expressed in the dorsal peripodial membrane and margin cells beginning in the first instar (6,35,43); at least at later stages, dorsal wg expression is dependent on pnr (41).…”

“…Both Ser and its upstream activator Lobe are required for ventral eye development and growth (42). Lobe and Ser have been shown to repress ventral wg expression during the second instar; their absence results in ectopic Wg signaling that triggers cell death and loss of the ventral eye (49).…”

“…Anteroposterior compartments are formed prior to dorsoventral (DV) patterning in most imaginal discs (Cohen 1993). However, in the eye disc, the formation of the DV axis is the first lineage restriction event (Baker 1978;Dominguez and de Celis 1998;Singh and Choi 2003). Therefore, it is important to understand how DV patterning and growth is regulated in the early eye disc.…”

“…Apart from the genes expressed in a domain-specific pattern, there are genes that are expressed ubiquitously in the eye but exhibit a domain-specific function (Chern and Choi 2002;Singh and Choi 2003;Singh et al 2004). For example, Lobe (L), which encodes a novel protein, is expressed ubiquitously in the eye disc but is required only for ventral eye development.…”
