Initial Relaxation Response: Personality and Treatment Factors

Abstract: The relative effectiveness of three techniques used for relaxation training (EMG Biofeedback, Progressive Muscle Relaxation, and Self-relaxation) was compared for 12 subjects who scored high or low on trait anxiety. Dependent variables included change scores based on EMG readings and pulse rate and posttreatment State-anxiety. Pulse rate was significantly affected by the type of treatment, i.e., Progressive Muscle Relaxation produced less decrease in pulse rate than the other two techniques. EMG and State anxi… Show more

“…This proposed requisite minimal variance level was obtained for BVP but not for HR. However, BVP increases are also directly associated with the relaxation response (Rawson, Bhatnagar, & Schneider, 1985) and with relaxation trials during autogenic feedback training (Cowings et al, 2001;Cowings & Toscano, 2000).…”

“…peak expiratory flow rate (among asthmatics) (Davis, Saunders, Creer, & Chai, 1973), and heart rate (Rawson, Bhatnagar, & Schneider, 1985). Taped PR tends to be less powerful than live (see reviews in Lehrer, 1982;Lehrer & Woolfolk, 1984;Lehrer, Woolfolk, & Goldman, 1986), but does produce significant physiological effects during training sessions.…”

“…Based on the updated void fraction field, the fluid properties (equations (16) and (17)) and the normal force (equation 18) are calculated and the interface is reconstructed. Although equations are written for convection of phase fraction, there can be always the possibility of getting false diffusion [25].…”
