Inhibition of Three Potato Pathogens by Phenazine-Producing Pseudomonas spp. Is Associated with Multiple Biocontrol-Related Traits

Abstract: Plant-beneficial phenazine-producing Pseudomonas spp. are effective biocontrol agents, thanks to the broad-spectrum antibiotic activity of the phenazine antibiotics they produce. These bacteria have received considerable attention over the last 20 years, but most studies have focused only on the ability of a few genotypes to inhibit the growth of a limited number of plant pathogens.

“…were found to suppress the growth of F. oxysporum . This finding was in co-relation with various published literature which reported that endophytes are involved in controlling plant pathogens ( Alenezi et al, 2016 ; Balan et al, 2017 ; Kurata et al, 2017 ; Biessy et al, 2021 ; Kipgen et al, 2021 ).…”

“…strains could also alter P. infestans' growth. Likewise, Biessy et al [24] characterized the inhibitory activities of 63 phenazine-producing Pseudomonas spp. against P. infestans in in vitro assays, and also measured under these conditions phenazine production by 13 strains of interest.…”

“…The inhibitory activity of these 63 Pseudomonas spp. strains against three potato pathogens-P. infestans, S. scabies and Verticillium dahliae-was also evaluated in in vitro confrontational assays [24]. To further improve our knowledge of biocontrol and the role played by phenazines, we carried out in planta antagonisitic assays in potato tubers against P. infestans using a subset of 23 Pseudomonas spp.…”

“…piscium strains of biocontrol interest: DTR133, a strong rhizosphere colonizer, and ToZa7, which displays a lower rhizocompetence [ 53 ]. These strains, both isolated from the tomato rhizosphere, were chosen because of their promising traits for biocontrol against different pathogens [ 54 , 55 , 56 , 57 , 58 ], and their distinct rhizosphere colonization levels on A. thaliana ecotype Columbia. The studied plant mutants were affected in root exudation, immunity, and root system architecture.…”
