Ingestive behavior and efficacy of male sheep housed in different stocking densities

Abstract: The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of housing density on ingestive behavior of male Santa Inês sheep housed individually and in double. Forty non-castrated males were used with an average initial weight of 21.33±2.62 kg and an average age of 120 days. The males were housed in two types of covered stalls: double stalls (two males/stall) of 3.0 m 2 and individual stalls of 1.50 m 2. Animals housed in individual stalls spent more time ruminating and less time eating than those in double stalls.… Show more

“…In the current study, the concentrations of fibrous carbohydrates in the diets (NDF and ADF) were similar, showing an average rumination time of 8.4 h/day. Costa et al [ 32 ] indicated that, regardless of the concentration of nondigestible neutral detergent fiber in the diet, lambs with high intake rates have shorter rumination times. Numerically, the rumination time was short in lambs fed the CSFA diet, which may have promoted higher DM and NDF rumination efficiencies.…”

“…is defined as swallowing water were recorded according to the methodology proposed by Costa et al (2019), by instantaneous and continuous sampling, using the focal sampling method and sampling intervals of 5 min in a direct fashion, with continuous periods of 24 h from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. The number of times the animal defecated, urinated, and sought water was visually and continually observed for 24 h by strategically positioned trained observers in an alternation system so as not to promote changes in the routine of the animals.…”

“…The behavioral variables observed were: feeding (chewing a starter in their mouth), ruminating (chewing regurgitated food, either standing or in lying position), idleness (standing without any movement or behavior), drinking (swallowing the water), mastication (the sum of feeding times and the rumination time), and other activities (defecation, urination, drinking). The environment was kept under artificial illumination during data collection of the nocturnal observation of the animals (Costa et al, 2019). Data on rumination time and quantity of chews per feed cake were carried out at two pre-established times: from 10:00 pm to 0:00 am and from 4:00 am to 6:00 am, in which the time of rumination by bolus was counted by using a digital timer, and direct observation of the number of chews per bolus.…”
