Ingestion of Salmon Nasal Cartilage-Derived Proteoglycan Improves Skin Condition: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Controlled Study

Abstract: Background: Proteoglycan is one of the components of the extracellular matrix with various biological activities and has been used as the functional foods to improve knee joint health or skin condition. Objective: To examine the effect of ingestion of salmon (Oncorhynchus keta, Salmonidae) nasal cartilage-derived proteoglycan (sPG) on skin condition, we performed a randomized, double-blind, controlled study in healthy adult volunteers. Methods: Recruited subjects (n=156) were men and women, ages 21-62 years. F… Show more

“…Briefly, frozen (−20°C) salmon nasal cartilage was dissolved in a solution of 4–5% acetic acid and salmon proteoglycan was extracted. High-performance liquid chromatography analysis was performed and detected a salmon proteoglycan peak as 450,000 molecular size, as previously reported ( 36 , 37 ).…”

“…sPG is a product extracted with 4% acetic acid and subsequently purified, as we have previously reported [ 63 ]. D-(+)-glucosamine hydrochloride and Type I collagen were purchased from FUJIFILM Wako Pure Chemical Corporation, Osaka, Japan.…”

“…These significant findings were subsequently verified in humans through a randomised, controlled study. A two-week treatment course could improve skin elasticity, periocular wrinkling, conspicuous pores and blotches and induce positive corneum structural changes in both men and women [69]. Since Vercilex ® is a multi-molecular extract rich in several bioactive proteoglycans, such as versican, decorin and biglycan, its level and spectrum of clinical efficacy are higher and wider compared to the more basic aggrecan-based cartilage extracts (see below).…”
