Infrared Spectra of Crystalline and Matrix-Isolated Carbonyl Sulfide

Abstract: The infrared spectrum of carbonyl sulfide has been examined as a polycrystalline film at 80°K and also in matrix-isolated form, using argon, nitrogen, and CS2 as the matrix materials. Particular attention has been given to the ν3 vibration, which appears as an abnormally broad and asymmetric band in solid OCS. The asymmetry of ν3 does not appear to be the result of any significant reflection effects nor is it due to disorder in the crystal. A study of the concentration dependence of the ν3 frequency in isotopi… Show more

“…The infrared absorptions of the H 2 O monomer, dimer, and trimer trapped in solid neon are well known for the fundamental modes, and for many overtones and combinations. 23,24 Few studies 25,26 have been done on the OCS monomer in matrix, and the only available experimental data on the OCS dimer [15][16][17] and trimer 27,28 were obtained by the McKellar group in a supersonic slit-jet expansion of a He/OCS gas mixture probed with a tunable diode laser in the region of the C-O fundamental stretching mode.…”

“…No signals attributable to other forms were clearly observed in the spectra. In the same way, the early growth of new bands with the irradiation corresponding to the known products CO [20] and OCS [21] were observed, followed by new absorptions in the 1800, 800 and 500 cm À1 regions. A feature appearing at 1877.2 cm À1 was identified as the ClCO radical [22], and others were tagged as the very well known species Cl 2 CO [23] and SCl 2 [24].…”

“…The infrared absorption of the OCS crystal in the intramolecular bending region has already been discussed (Yamada andPerson 1965, Verderame andNixon 1966). The infrared spectrum has been registered for randomly oriented samples obtained by deposition of the vapour on a cold window and is shown in figure 1.…”
