Infrared Absorption Spectra of Chromyl Fluoride and Chromyl Chloride

Abstract: The infrared absorption spectra of gaseous chromyl fluoride and gaseous chromyl chloride have been investigated. The region investigated for chromyl fluoride was 2 to 36 μ while that for chromyl chloride was 2 to 25 μ. Six fundamental and nineteen first overtone or binary combination bands have been observed in the spectrum of chromyl fluoride, the fundamental bands being located at 274, 304, 727, 789, 1006, and 1016 cm—1. The observed transitions have been assigned on the basis of a tetrahedral model of C2v s… Show more

“…1978 cm À1 (assigned to the overtones and combination modes of the [CrO 2 ] fragment [25,27,45]) decreases, consistent with loss of CrO 2 Cl 2 from the surface (green lines in Fig. 1 inset) [25,27].…”

“…The IR spectra of both CrO 2 Cl 2 -modified silicas contain a small signal centered at ca. 1978 cm À1 , assigned to the overtones and combination modes 2t a (CrO 2 ), t a (CrO 2 ) + t s (CrO 2 ), and 2t s (CrO 2 ) [25,27,45].…”

“…Therefore, the increasing intensity of the α 2 band may result from the generation of a new substance. According to the literature, [27,28] the following reactions will occur in the presence of AHF:…”

“…This indicates that Cr 2 O 3 species are formed in the catalyst. The phenomenon may be explained as follows: reaction (Eqn (1)) is a reversible reaction, [28] and the reverse the reaction dominates when AHF is turned off, by which CrO 3 species are produced. However, this phase is unstable at this temperature and transforms into Cr 2 O 3 (Eqn (3)), which is in good agreement with the arguments in the literature.…”
