Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are natural events produced by massive concentration of toxic phytoplankton that can color red, ocher, brown or yellow large extensions of water, its intensity depends on the different species of phytoplankton involved in the proliferation. The spreading of these formations involves an interaction of biological, chemical, meteorological and anthropogenic factors. Several species with potential toxicity have been reported along Mexican coasts, such as Gymnodinium catenatum, Karenia brevis, Pyrodinium bahamense var. compressum. The toxic bloom not only causes an impact during the event, it produces negative effects afterward, such as accumulating deposits of organic matter, alterations of benthic community structure and composition, species presence/absence, and bioaccumulation of toxins in organisms such as bivalve molluscs mainly. Poisoning may occur by consuming contaminated seafood or by direct exposure to aerosols of the toxins, which can provoke diarrhea or even death. Due to the impact of this type of event on the economy, environment and public health, strategies for monitoring, prevention, and systematic mitigation have been implemented for the evaluation of HAB effects. The aim of this review was to determine the state-of-the art of HAB, their reports and effects on the environment and public health in Mexico.

Alrededor del 80% de las mercancías que son parte del comercio internacional se mueve vía marítima, representando el 70% del valor de las mercancías. Desde el punto de vista del comercio internacional, los países que pertenecen a la región de Latinoamérica son relevantes; por lo que el objetivo de este trabajo de investigación es estudiar la dependencia del desempeño logístico hacia la calidad de la infraestructura portuaria y la conectividad de las líneas navieras tomando como unidad de análisis 20 países del continente americano. Esta investigación es de tipo cuantitativa de alcance correlacional y explicativo. La información se extrajo de la base de datos de UNCTAD; CEPAL y Global Economy para los años 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, por lo que se conformó y estimó (en el paquete econométrico E-views 10) un panel de datos balanceado de 100 observaciones. Los principales hallazgos confirman la hipótesis de que en el continente americano el desempeño logístico depende de la calidad de la infraestructura portuaria y la conectividad de las líneas navieras.

The present study originated with the expansion of the boardwalk within the urban and port area of Manzanillo, México. Prior to civil works related to the placement of tetrapods, surveys of potential sites for the relocation of benthic organisms in alternative areas were carried out. Based on indicators of the physical–chemical environment and biotic factors, nine areas with potential for relocation were evaluated. The areas of greatest potential were associated with environments located away from the influence of the port environment. A total of 13,559 benthic organisms belonging to 68 species associated with three main substratum types (rocky, sandy, and mixed) were collected. There were no differences in the ecological indices between the three substrata. The proximity of the collection area to the influence of port traffic and sources of pollution associated with the physical environment could be an important factor that affects ecological indices and the reduction in the abundance of some protected species and species of commercial interest. The success of collection and relocation processes depends on minimizing possible errors, especially during transportation, when overcrowding, handling, and damage resulting from variable physico‐chemical conditions should be avoided. Through a scheme of actions based on ecological principles, management actions, and civil engineering technology, it was possible to carry out mitigation, conservation, and habitat improvement actions in coastal marine environments exposed to anthropogenic impacts.
