A model of barriers faced by women in the field of 'Information Technology is presented. Three distinct life-stages of early education, career-choices and career advancement are analyzed. At each stage, effects of social and structural factors, which may act as barriers are identified and discussed. Interaction of social and st… Show more

“…Figure 2 represents the responses of all participants who identified themselves as males. 3 In comparison to Figure 1, we begin to notice a shift between "soft" IT skills, such as communication skills and customer relationship skills, and "hard" IT skills, such as programming skills and networking skills. The skills that men describe as masculine are a representation of typical stereotyping of males as more inclined to be skilled in business knowledge and skills that are perceived to require in-depth thought.…”

Reflecting the fact that males outnumber females in our survey by a ratio of nearly two to one, the Male Overall diagram represents a stark contrast to the Overall diagram in Figure 1 with respect to the movement of skills from feminine and gender neutral to masculine.…”

“…Some institutions have been more successful than others in achieving gender equity, as the recent Carnegie Mellon study shows for the field of computer science (Margolis & Fisher 2002). Factors such as the availability of role models, mentoring, networking, curriculum, advising, and financial and administrative support have all been identified as making a positive difference in female students' experiences in computer science programs (Ahuja, 2002;Spertus 1991). We propose that this will be the case in applied IT programs as well.…”
