Information Systems Outsourcing Reasons and Risks: Review and Evolution

Abstract: The present paper proposes a set of outsourcing reasons and risks, subsequently assessing them in the case of major Spanish companies through a survey that was replicated twice. In order to achieve these aims, a questionnaire was administered to the IS managers of the largest Spanish firms. The longitudinal analysis allows us not only to draw trends but also to evaluate the degree of continuity and change in outsourcing reasons and risks. “…The comparison of risks and benefits was also used in the study of IT procurement. Hidden costs and several security problems were considered risks (Earl ; Kaynak, Tatoglu, and Kula ); while in other studies (Gonzalez, Gasco, and Llopis ; Kaynak, Tatoglu, and Kula ; Kremic, Tukel, and Rom ), the cost advantage and quality improvement were considered the benefits in the research of IT procurement and IS outsourcing. Some researchers (Gewald and Dibbern ; Jurison ) consider the primary risk of outsourcing to be companies that cannot manage their own IS, while some IT procurement studies (Kannabiran and Dharmalingam ) considered the immature capability of the organization in adopting IT as the risk factor.…”

“…Hence, we also observe a shift in SMEs from only buying the resources, to SMEs outsourcing their key operations due to the competitive market environment [63]. However, utilizing outsourcing as one of the key strategies might mean high dependency upon the vendors [156]. This is especially important for competitiveness where "business success now depends on the sum of both the SME's and its partners' performances" [30, p. 295].…”

“…For instance, Brender and Markov (2013) focused on risk and control analysis with a sample of Swiss companies concerning their prospective adoption of public cloud services. In another research surveying 329 Spanish companies, Gonzalez, Gasco, and Llopis (2009) proposed top 10 reasons and 11 main risks of ITO and compared the ranking results in 2001 and 2006. Based on their findings, no dramatic changes seem to have taken place in the interval period.…”
