The popularity of big data and business analytics has increased tremendously in the last decade and a key challenge for organizations is in understanding how to leverage them to create business value. However, while the literature acknowledges the importance of these topics little work has addressed them from the organization's point of view. This paper investigates the challenges faced by organizational managers seeking to become more data and information-driven in order to create value. Empirical research comprised a mixed methods approach using (1) a Delphi study with practitioners through various forums and (2) interviews with business analytics managers in three case organizations. The case studies reinforced the Delphi findings and highlighted several challenge focal areas: organizations need a clear data and analytics strategy, the right people to effect a data-driven cultural change, and to consider data and information ethics when using data for competitive advantage. Further, becoming data-driven is not merely a technical issue and demands that organizations firstly organize their business analytics departments to comprise business analysts, data scientists, and IT personnel, and secondly align that business analytics capability with their business strategy in order to tackle the analytics challenge in a systemic and joined-up way. As a result, this paper presents a business analytics ecosystem for organizations that contributes to the body of scholarly knowledge by identifying key business areas and functions to address to achieve this transformation.
Purpose-This study explores the importance and impact of supply and manufacturing risk management upon business performance within the context of Chinese manufacturing supply chains. Design/Methodology/Approach-A two phased multi-method approach was adopted, which included a survey questionnaire to practitioners in Chinese manufacturing supply chains followed by semi-structured interviews. The findings included 103 valid survey responses complemented by six semi-structured interviews. Findings-The results indicate that in Chinese manufacturing context supply risk and manufacturing risk management are both vital for business performance. A high correlation between business and manufacturing risk management performance exists, however no significant impact of supplier dependency, systematic purchasing, maturity of production and supply chain, and human resources was found despite previously these elements being regarded as key influencers for supply and manufacturing risk management performance. The Chinese manufacturing supply chain indicated that elements such as the supplier and customer orientation, flexibility, manufacturing and supply risk highly connotes with business performance. Theoretical/Practical implications-In the current unpredictable and volatile business environment the competitiveness of manufacturing supply chains to a large extent depend on their ability to identify, assess and manage the manufacturing and supply risks. The findings of this study will assist supply chain managers in taking decision on manufacturing and supply risk management and reducing the uncertainty upon their business performance. Originality/value-The supply chain risk has been widely explored within the context of individual case studies, or standalone models focusing on either supply or manufacturing risk in supply chains, however to what extent this has been applicable to a wider context and its impact upon business process has not been explored. Hence, this study simultaneously has analysed manufacturing risk and supply risk and its impact upon Chinese manufacturing supply chains business performance. Moreover, this study uses a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods, which is often limited in this area. Finally, the institutional theory lens offers novel insights in better understanding the factors that can affect the impact of supply and manufacturing risk management upon business performance in those contexts, such as China, where the institutional aspect presents specific features.
Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to review extant literature and present a proposed research agenda to examine whether environmental, i.e. green performance measures, can be integrated within an existing supply chain performance framework, explore what a meaningful industry-recognised environmental measure should look like, and understand the direct benefits of incorporating environmental measures within a supply chain performance framework. Design/methodology/approach -The paper is based on an extensive literature review in four key areas: performance management, supply chain performance management, environmental management and benchmarking. Findings -The literature suggests there is an opportunity to explore the relationship between the environment and logistics and that environmental supply chain performance measurement (SCPM) should enable organisations to more effectively benchmark their supply chain environmental performance. A framework incorporating these notions and a research agenda for empirical study are also presented. Practical implications -The paper provides direction for practitioners on measuring the environmental impact of their supply chains in the context of their overall business performance. The proposed research agenda integrates an environmental measure into an extant supply chain performance framework to provide practitioners with a more holistic view of their supply chain performance in relation to competitors. Originality/value -There has been limited research conducted in this area. This paper provides insights into developing a green SCPM framework.
In this article, with the increased disruptions faced by businesses and the occurrence of natural disasters in the world, supply chain resilience remains a major challenge especially for smalland medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Despite the relevance of SMEs to the economy, there is limited scholarly work on resilience practices in SMEs and a limited understanding of how SMEs can achieve resilience. To understand the role of supply chain resilience in SMEs, we undertake a systematic literature review (SLR), which results in the identification and analysis of 101 journal articles, published between 2006 and 2019, on SME supply chain resilience. Our analysis into SME supply chain resilience highlights four focal areas: 1) the role of collaboration and culture; 2) the role of SMEs' capabilities; 3) the role of Information Systems; and (4) the role of cost and financing. Our SLR investigation identifies future research directions and focal areas tailored to SMEs to help them to assess and develop their supply chain resilience.
Organizations face ever increasing pressure to deliver triple-bottom-line performance results in their supply chains. Yet despite the importance and complexity associated with environmental supply chain performance measurement (ESCPM), organizations struggle to achieve this. The purpose of this paper is to identify the important enablers, inhibitors and benefits to implementing ESCPM as a practice in firms. Data were collected from three focus groups and an industry survey of 388 UK supply chain professionals in a three-phase empirical study. Eighteen enablers, seventeen inhibitors and eleven benefits were identified and ranked in importance. A supply chain practice-based view was utilized as an overarching theoretical lens to conceptualize the study's findings and propose nineteen antecedents, arranged in a hierarchical framework, to enable practitioners to make effective ESCPM decisions. This paper provides an up-to-date review of the factors which influence ESCPM practice, addressing the need for additional research in this area.
