Information Systems History: What is History? What is is History? What is History? … and Why Even Bother with History?

Abstract: Prologue and preambleThe views of Collingwood can be summarized as follows. The philosophy of history is concerned neither with 'the past by itself ' nor with 'the historian's thought about it by itself ', but with 'the two things in their mutual relations'. (This dictum reflects the two current meanings of the word 'history' -the inquiry conducted by the historian and the series of past events into which he inquires.) Carr (1961: 11)

“…In addition to the AIS History Website, the Journal of Information Technology has published two special issues on history in IS (Volume 28, Issues 1 and 2), with the stated view that a joint understanding of the field's history can help form a shared vision and identity for the field (Bryant et al, 2013). This paper therefore represents one among the growing number of efforts (e.g., Hirschheim & Klein 2011; in this line of historical and longitudinal study focusing, as it does, on the past, present and potential futures of IS research in Europe.…”

“…The perspective of IS history in this department continues the efforts of the Association for Information System (AIS) historian Ping Zhang to accomplish the goals of the IS history initiative: 1) to collect, represent, and preserve the IS field's history; 2) to interpret, write, disseminate, and review the IS field's history; and 3) to discover/identify IS genealogy, roots, sources, and facets that deserve to be examined from a historical point of view (Zhang, 2015(Zhang, , 2016. These goals, together with several other recent deliberations on the importance of focusing on IS history (Bryant, Black, Land, & Porra, 2013;Hirschheim & Klein, 2011Hirschheim, Saunders, & Straub, 2012;Land, 2010Land, , 2015Straub, 2015), emphasize the sense of urgency for the field to engage in this effort. The perspective of IS philosophy has also captured the attention of IS researchers, which one can see from the numerous highly cited papers in top IS journals that focus on the foundations, progress, and future of the IS field.…”
