Information systems and creativity: an empirical study

Abstract: Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to report research that sought to understand the requirements of information systems designed to support people engaged in creative intellectual activity. The research aimed to provide empirical evidence based on a case study of a particular arena of creativity, namely electro-acoustic music composition. However, it also sought to identify issues that may apply more widely to other arenas of human creativity. Design/methodology/approach -The research was based on a related… Show more

“…Where the subject of the ethnography includes design itself, additional tools are commonly found, for example, design workshops (Emery & Devane, ), think aloud designing (Eaglestone et al ., ), designer diaries (Naur, ), design thinking (Lugmayr et al ., ) and search conferences (Emery & Devane, ).…”

“…The 'think aloud' method requires designers to describe what they are doing as they design and to immediately reflect on what they have done. The purpose of this method is to provide insights into the creative process of design (Eaglestone et al, 2007).…”

“…For example, Group Support System ThinkTank is used for collaborative idea generation in large organizations (Voigt, Niehaves, & Becker, 2012). In addition to supporting group idea generation (Dennis, Valacich, Connolly, & Wynne, 1996;Klein & Dologite, 2000;Wang, Cosley, & Fussell, 2010), creativity support systems have been design for computer-aided design (Sugimoto, Hori, & Ohsuga, 1994;Chaudhuri & Koltun, 2010), knowledge management (Lin & Hwang, 2014), musical composition (Eaglestone, Ford, Brown, & Moore, 2007), and culinary art (Mueller, Debortoli, & Seidel, 2013). Furthermore, creativity support can be included in decision support systems (Elam & Mead, 1990;Forgionne & Newman, 2007) and enterprise mobile applications (Chung, Lee & Choi, 2014).…”

“…The limitation of variance theories is compounded by the conceptualization of the IT artifact as enabling the creative process and an emphasis on the outcome or product of the process rather than the context or environment (press) in which the process occurs. Although there has been some research into specific application contexts or 'presses' in studies of creative artists such as musicians (Eaglestone, Ford, Brown, & Moore, 2007) they are few and far between and do not address the process dynamics that characterize creativity.…”
