Information Mediation Using Metamodels

Abstract: Information mediation is an approach used to resolve heterogeneity of online information sources. This article discusses the concept of information mediation and several related research projects that use a typical mediation model. The problems and issues with existing approaches are discussed. This article then proposes the use of metamodels as an advanced architecture for information mediation, where XML is a main driving force. The new architecture is partly established on the common warehouse metamodel (CW… Show more

“…With regard to the multidimensional modelling of data warehouses, we use the UML profile presented in (Luján-Mora et al, 2006), which is enriched for their architectural modelling as has previously been described. In addition, the "common warehouse metamodel" (CWM) (OMG, 2008), which is widely used to deal with the interoperability of applications (Zhao & Siau, 2007), is employed to represent the deployed data structures for both the underlying databases and OLAP applications (Chaudhuri & Dayal, 1997) in a vendor-independent manner.…”

“…Data Integration. In data integration, a set of heterogeneous data sources are queried and accessed through a unified global and virtual view (Lenzerini, 2002;Zhao & Siau, 2007). There are many ontologybased data integration applications which use ontologies as their global views.…”

“…This would present an advantage over traditional development approaches as the solution would be created using the organization's terms instead of using implementation terms; we later present a more detailed view of how software development can be done combining metamodeling and model transformations. An example of the need of using metamodeling and metamodels can be found in Zhao and Siau (2007), which uses metamodels to handle the mediation of information sources.…”
