Information, Direct Access to Farmers, and Rural Market Performance in Central India

Abstract: This paper estimates the impact of a change in procurement strategy of a private buyer in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. Beginning in October 2000, Internet kiosks and warehouses were established that provide wholesale price information and an alternative marketing channel to soy farmers in the state. Using a new market-level dataset, the estimates suggest a significant increase in soy price after the introduction of kiosks, supporting the predictions of the theoretical model. Moreover, there is a… Show more

“…Similarly large effects are suggested by preliminary research in Peru (Beuerrmann, 2015;Chong et al, 2005) and the Philippines (Labonne and Chase, 2009). Others find much smaller (Goyal, 2010) or no effects (Fafchamps and Minten, 2012;Mitra et al, 2011). A more thorough list of such studies is presented in Table 1.…”

“…In rural areas, the ICTs can raise incomes by increasing the agricultural productivity (Lio and Liu 2006) and introducing income channels other than the traditional farm jobs. The current limited evidence from individual farmers and fishers in India supports the conclusion that the ICTs improve incomes and the quality of life among the rural poor (Jensen 2007;Goyal 2010). The idea that a wider access to and the use of ICTs throughout a country will reduce the inequalities in income and the quality of life between rural and urban residents is compelling.…”
