Application maintenance consumes a considerable amount of an organization's time and resources each year. Almost 60% of IT budget is spent alone on application maintenance. The reason of offshore outsourcing of application maintenance is not only the reduction of maintenance cost but to free up the resources and to keep the focus on core products. Offshore outsourcing is a common business strategy that is used by companies to achieve cost savings about 20-50%. However, the decision making process of application maintenance is a complex phenomenon. It is based on a set of influencing factors, clients' requirements and nature of the project. Hence, the current study is aimed at the in-depth investigation of the complex sourcing decision process of application maintenance. Accordingly, a systematic literature review is performed to determine the influencing factors and critical success factors that will be used by the decision makers for the evaluation of projects before making the outsourcing decisions. A total of 15 influencing factors out of 52 selected papers were identified. Based on the defined criteria, amongst the identified factors, only 10 factors were ranked as critical success factors, which are employees' skills, cost, legal requirements, infrastructure, communication, knowledge transfer, maturity level, project management, language barrier and frequent requirements changes. Consequently, a sourcing model was proposed based on the identified critical success factors that help the IT managers and domain experts in making appropriate outsourcing decisions. En la actualidad todas las organizaciones dan soporte a sus procesos de negocio incorporando productos de software. Dichos productos, a lo largo de su vida útil, deben ser modificados por diferentes motivos. Mientras el producto esté en operación, requerirá que se realice mantenimiento. Dada la criticidad de la característica de mantenibilidad de los productos, es relevante que cada vez que se especifican los requisitos de un nuevo software, quede claramente establecido qué hacer para asegurar que el mismo pueda ser mantenido en el transcurso de su vida útil. Este artículo presenta una revisión bibliográfica, cuyo objetivo es presentar algunas consideraciones importantes sobre el proceso de mantenimiento, que se deben tener en cuenta a la hora de especificar el atributo de mantenibilidad, de tal forma que, posteriormente se pueda validar que efectivamente el producto es mantenible. Para esto se presentan algunos desafíos del proceso de mantenimiento, métricas asociadas a la mantenibilidad de los productos y algunas recomendaciones para conseguir su correcta especificación. La principal conclusión obtenida, es que las organizaciones debieran recolectar a través del tiempo, datos históricos relacionados con los ajustes y cambios realizados en el producto, que permitan a futuro evaluar la conveniencia de continuar dando mantenimiento al producto, o simplemente reemplazarlo por uno nuevo. Además, dada la relevancia del atributo de mantenibilidad, en la especificación de requisitos, se deben incluir aspectos funcionales y de proceso que permitan de manera objetiva validar posteriormente si un producto es mantenible o no. Software maintainability is a very important quality attribute. Its prediction for relational database-driven software applications can help organizations improve the maintainability of these applications. The research presented herein adopts a survey-based approach where a survey was conducted with 40 software professionals aimed at identifying and ranking the important maintainability predictors for relational database-driven software applications. The survey results were analyzed using frequency analysis. The results suggest that maintainability prediction for relational database-driven applications is not the same as that of traditional software applications in terms of the importance of the predictors used for this purpose. The results also provide a baseline for creating maintainability prediction models for relational database-driven software applications.
