“…Although these studies showed that the addition of a high dose of EGF (100 ng/ml) into the culture medium had no remarkable effect on embryo development, we found that EGF at a concentration of 100 ng/ml or more induced a significant increase in the proportion of embryos at the blastocyst stage (21.3 and 29.7% for 100 and 200 ng/ml, respectively, vs. 11.9% for 0 ng/ ml on day 8) and that the numbers of cells in the ICM were also increased by supplementation with 1, 100 and 200 ng/ml (30.4, 32.1 and 32.5 for 1, 100 and 200 ng/ml, respectively, vs. 26.1 for 0 ng/ml). These results indicate that EGF is effective at influencing the rate of development to the blastocyst stage at concentrations of 100 ng/ml or more in our culture system.It is reported that IGF-I increases the numbers of cells in the ICM [18] and TE [28,42] and the total number of cells [19,29] in embryo culture.
