To enhance compression stability and fire retardancy of densified wood, a new modification method i.e., combined nitrogen–phosphorus (NP) fire retardant pre-impregnation with surface thermo-mechanical densification is used to fabricate a certain thickness of functionalized surface layer on poplar. This combined treated wood is investigated via vertical density profile (VDP), and the compression stability is revealed by both soaking test and cone analysis. Results demonstrate that the combined treatment hardened the surface of wood and reformed the interface combination of the NP with the wood cell wall, thus making the surface tissue more close-grained. Fire retardancy was also enhanced; the total heat release and CO generation values decreased by 21.9% and 68.4%, respectively, when compared with that of solely NP-treated wood. Moreover, surface hardness increased by 15.8%, and the recovery of surface hardness and thickness were 56.8% and 77.2% lower than that of simply densified wood. It appears that this NP-involved thermal densification could be considered as an alternative approach to enhance both the compression stability and fire resistance of wood.

Sustainable New Brick and Thermo-Acoustic Insulation Panel from Mineralization of Stranded Driftwood Residues

Abstract:There is considerable interest recently in by-products for application in green buildings. These materials are widely used as building envelope insulators or blocks. In this study, an experimental study was conducted to test stranded driftwood residues as raw material for possible thermo-acoustic insulation panel and environmentally sustainable brick. The thermal and acoustic characteristics of such a natural by-product were examined. Part of samples were mineralized by means of cement-based additive to reinforce the material and enhance its durability as well as fire resistance. Several mixtures with different sizes of ground wood chips and different quantities of cement were investigated. The thermo-acoustic in-lab characterization was aimed at investigating the thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, volumetric specific heat, and acoustic transmission loss. All samples were tested before and after mineralization. Results from this study indicate that it is possible to use stranded driftwood residues as building materials with competitive thermo-acoustic properties. In fact, the thermal conductivity was shown to be always around 0.07 W/mK in the unbound samples, and around double that value for the mineralized samples, which present a much higher volumetric specific heat (1.6 MJ/m 3 K) and transmission loss capability. The lignin powder showed a sort of intermediate behavior between the unbound and the mineralized samples.

Multi-Objective Curing Cycle Optimization for Glass Fabric/Epoxy Composites Using Poisson Regression and Genetic Algorithm

In this study, a multi-parameter design of experiments, using Taguchi method, has been conducted in order to investigate the optimum curing conditions for glass fabric/epoxy laminated composites, followed by a statistical analysis and genetic algorithm optimization. Heating rate a, temperature T 1 and duration h 1 were treated as independent variables in a L 25 Taguchi orthogonal array addressing five levels each. Tensile load and flexural strength were examined as pre-selected quality objectives. The results of the analysis of variance performed showed that the significant parameters for both tensile and flexural strength were temperature and duration, at a 95% confidence level. The estimation of the curing parameters for optimum tensile and flexural performance was achieved with an error considerably lower than 1%. The Poisson regression analysis was introduced to achieve a highly accurate regression model, with R 2 greater than 97% for both optimization criteria. Finally, these two regression models were converted into a two-fold function for maximizing both criteria, and used as fitness function for a multi-objective optimization genetic algorithm.
