The inhibitory effect of sewage sludge on kidney leucocyte respiratory burst activity was probably attributable to these immunotoxins and was also observed following experimental exposure of dab to sewage sludge (Secombes et al, 1991).…”

: Plaice were caught at five stations varying in distance from the sewage sludge dumping site at Garroch Head, in the Firth of Clyde, Scotland and a number of physical and immunological parameters monitored. Significant intergroup differences were apparent in condition factor, hepatosomatic index, serum protein concentration, serum lysozyme, serum immunoglobulin (Ig), liver vitamin E, kidney leucocyte respiratory burst activity and kidney leucocyte bactericidal activity. Of these parameters, the hepatosomatic index, serum lysozyme, serum Ig and kidney leucocyte bactericidal activity showed a negative correlation with distance from the dump site (that is, were highest at the dump site); serum protein and liver vitamin E showed a positive correlation. Factors found not to vary between the groups included the spleen index, serum antiprotease activity and kidney leucocyte phagocytic activity. These findings are discussed in relation to recent experimental data on the effects of sewage sludge exposure on the immune system of fish.

“…Wishkovsky et al (1989) reported that tributyltin (TBT) exposure in vitro inhibited CL responses to ingested zymosan in three species of estuarine fish. Rice and Weeks (1989) concurred that higher TBT doses (-500 pg/I) inhibited CL, but found stimulation of CL by 50 pg/I; the opposing effects of TBT probably result from alterations in calcium flux across the cell membrane induced by different concentrations of TBT. Peritoneal 256 macrophages from oyster toadfish (Opsanus tau) exposed in vivo to TBT showed a dose-dependent suppression of CL (Rice and Weeks, 1990).…”

This research has been conducted both in-house and extramurally and has involved scientists from other Federal agencies, academic institutions, and the private sector. The need to enhance the integration of the research became increasingly evident as the program grew in the late 1980's. This growth came principally as a result of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers sponsorship of research to develop environmental applications of new, in vivo hazard assessment models for use in the burgeoning Department of Defense environmental remediation program. One of the many uses of these models is to answer the question, "How clean is clean?" and to assist in the establishment of more realistic clean-up goals for hazardous waste sites.An annual research review meeting was undertaken to facilitate the integration and technology transfer of this research program. This publication is the second 14.
