Influence of the Stacking Sequence on the Mechanical Properties of Glass/Sisal Hybrid Composites

Abstract: This study focused on the mechanical properties of pure sisal, pure glass, and hybrid sisal/glass compression-molded composites, in which various stacking sequences of fiber mat layers were used. It is shown that hybridization originated a material with general intermediate properties between pure glass and pure sisal. However, the importance of controlling the stacking sequence to enhance properties was evident. For instance, to optimize flexural behavior, there must be glass fibers mainly on the top and bott… Show more

“…The best flexural properties were found when the glass fibre was positioned at the outer layers, as it has better mechanical properties than the jute fibres. Amico et al [159] and Khalil et al [160] reached the same conclusion for interlayer hybrids composed of random mats of sisal/glass and oil palm empty fruit bunch/glass, respectively.…”

“…The layup of natural fibre hybrids has been extensively investigated [141,148,[158][159][160]. In most of these reports, the focus lies on improving the properties with respect to the natural fibre reference composite.…”

“…In literature there are many works related to these composites [11][12][13][14][15][16] but very few regarding hybrid composite reinforced by natural fibers and carbon types. 17 One of the most recent applications of the latter is regarding the realization of an ecologic prototype boat named 'Araldite,' which represents the smallest offshore racing boat (hull length ¼ 6.5 m, hull width ¼ 3 m, weight ¼ 750 kg, sail surface ¼ 120 m 2 ), which can sail the Atlantic sea.…”

“…The usually technologies used for manufacturing reinforced polymeric plates are hand lay-up process, hand lay-up and pressing and vacuum bag technology. The physical and mechanical properties of carbon/epoxy composite presented in open literature [10][11][12][13][14][15][16]. In the same time the presented results indicate a low density of materials in condition where mechanical properties are similar to metals.…”
