Influence of the solar wind dynamic pressure on the decay and injection of the ring current

Abstract: [1] The influence of the solar wind dynamic pressure on the decay and injection of the ring current is investigated empirically, on the basis of the solar wind and the geomagnetic index Dst of the OMNI database, for the period from January 1964 to July 2001. We found that when the position of the ring current is closer to the Earth for a higher solar wind dynamic pressure, the decay time of the ring current decreases. The decay time, in hours, varies as follows, t = 8.70 exp(6.66/(6.04 + P)), for northward int… Show more

“…From these studies, we can deduce the relationship between P d and D st . On the other hand, some studies have argued that the relationship between P d and D st is due to the dependence of transpolar potential saturation on P d (Xie et al, 2008;Weigel, 2010). However, these studies have not provided an explanation for the anti-correlation between the long-term variation of P d and the non-storm component of D st demonstrated in the present study.…”

“…Also, some authors investigated its effect on the geosynchronous magnetic field [Wing et al, 2002;Lee and Lyons, 2004]. However, the effect of the solar wind dynamic pressure on the development of the storm time ring current has received almost no attention until the recent work by Wang et al [2003]. Wang et al [2003] used solar wind and Dst index from the OMNI database to empirically investigate the influence of the solar wind dynamic pressure on the injection and decay of the ring current.…”

“…Among these studies, some considered a constant recovery time (e.g., Burton et al 1975), others depended on the convective electric field E y (O'Brien & McPherron 2000) or also on the dynamic pressure (Wang et al 2003).…”
