Influence of Surface Roughness Topography on Properties of Water-Lubricated Polymer Bearings: Experimental Research

Abstract: Surface smoothness of journal and bushing has significant influence on properties of sliding bearings. Relevant literature contains a number of theoretical works connected with the subject of surface roughness pattern and height. Calculations based on various models indicate that the structure of sliding surface influences bearing's hydrodynamic properties. One of the main conclusions is that roughness transversal to the sliding direction can increase hydrodynamic capacity of a bearing (H. Christensen and K.

“…Experiment-based research on various types of sliding waterlubricated bearings-including rigid, composite and elastic plastic ones (Litwin [20][21][22]), has been conducted at the Gdańsk University of Technology in recent years. The research has unequivocally demonstrated that a properly designed hydrodynamic water lubricated journal bearing is capable of working under a fluid lubrication regime at loads and speeds typical of practical applications.…”

“…Various types of water lubricated sliding bearings have been experimentally tested in recent years at the Gdańsk University of Technology -including both stiff composite bearings, as well as elastic, plastic ones (Litwin [10][11][12]15,26]). The research unequivocally established that a correctly designed water lubricated journal bearing may work in fluid film friction range under conditions of loads and speeds typically encountered in practical applications.…”

“…But the contact of ring produces more noises, which greatly affect the pressure, and furthermore, the reliability and the high cost of ring make its application limited. The other method is that the film pressure is measured by punching holes at different positions on bearing shell, leading the lubricant out to the pressure gauge or installing the pressure sensors in these holes [13]. Unfortunately, because…”
