Influence of sulfur fumigation on glycoside profile in Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng)

Abstract: BackgroundOver recent decades, sulfur fumigation is becoming abused in processing some freshly harvested herbs used as both medicine and food, although it has been questioned whether sulfur fumigation will change the efficacy and safety of the herbs. One of the herbs commonly processed by sulfur fumigation is Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng in Chinese). Glycosides are the main bioactive components of Jiegeng. Up to the present, no study has been carried out to evaluate the impact of sulfur fumigation on glycoside … Show more

“…Triterpene saponins, the most abundant component in PR, were also identified as major components [ 16 ]. The main cleavage pathway of triterpene saponins involves sequential intramolecular deglycosylation and interchain cleavage to produce characteristic fragment ions.…”

“…Compound 30 belongs to flavonoids, namely cosmosiin, generates [M‐H] − ion at m/z 431, the remarkably higher abundance ion at m/z 268 is consistent with loss of the glucosyl, the ion m/z 240 was generated by losing of CO from the ion m/z 268. Compounds 10 was identified as Tangshenoside ∣ by comparing the fragment ions with the literature [23]. Compounds 5 and 10 have similar fragmentation behavior and molecular weight difference of 162 Da, presumably the molecular formula of compound 5 is C 23 H 32 O 13 , by searching the Science Finder database to match with structure.…”

“…As a canonical and well-known Chinese medicine formula, SLBZ-AP is first described in " e Prescriptions of the Bureau of Taiping People's Welfare Pharmacy" in Song-dynasty [19] and contains twenty-eight species of TCM as Dangshen, Fuling, Baizhu, Gancao, and so on . ere are chemical components as saccharides (Dang Shen, Fu Ling, Bai Bian Dou) [37,38], glycosides (Shan Yao, Jie Geng, Shan Zhu Yu, Bai Shao) [39][40][41][42], and flavonoids (Bai Zhu, Gan Cao) [43,44] mainly in SLBZ-AP. Saccharides have immunomodulation effects [37].…”
