The focus of our work is to explore quasiparticle transmission through the quasi‐periodic superlattices based on the Lieb lattice, in which the fermion pseudo‐spin equals 1. We are the first to calculate and analyze the transmission spectra (quasiparticle transmission dependences on their energy) for such structures. The quasi‐periodic modulation is created with the help of the external electrostatic potential in the form of the rectangular barriers located along the axis of the superlattice. Our observations provide that the effective Fibonacci modulation is achieved by the alternation of the potential barriers heights in the various elements of the superlattice. For massless fermions, the quasi‐periodic modulation takes place under the conditions of the oblique incidence of the particles. For massive fermions, the quasi‐periodic modulation is observed both for the oblique and the normal incidence. Besides, we define the special importance of a super Klein tunneling band in the transmission spectra. The present study provides a thorough analysis of the transmission spectra dependence on the parameters of the problem. The conductivity of the structure considered is also analyzed. For a definite parameter set, the transmission spectra values for pseudospin‐1 fermions (Lieb lattice) and those of pseudospin‐1/2 (graphene) coincide. Our findings may have useful implications in the development of nanoelectronic devices based on the Lieb lattice.

Abstract-Introduction: Polygonum multiflorum (PM) has been commonly used as folk medicine for treatment of various conditions, such as early graying of hair in humans. However, there have been limited studies which have evaluated the toxicological and biological effects of PM in vitro as well as in vivo. In this study, PM root extracts in ethyl acetate (PM-E) and in distilled water (PM-W) were examined for their effects on the development of teratogenic defects/deaths. Additionally, they were evaluated for their effects on melanin formation in human melanocytes and pigmentation in embryos/larvae of wild type strain AB zebrafish (Danio rerio). Methods: Phytochemicals in PM roots were extracted in several solvents with increasing in their polarities. Chemical exposure tests were performed to investigate the toxic effects of PM root extracts on Zerbrafish embryos/larvae. Total melanins formed in zebrafish embryos/larvae as well as in human melanocytes were measured by spectrophotometer using dual wavelengths of 415 and 400 nm. Gene expressions were analyzed by realtime PCR. All experiments were independently repeated three times and statistical analyzed. Results: Our results showed that PM root extracts at concentrations of 40 mg/L and 105 mg/L induced the development of teratogenic defects, including yolk sac edema (or heart edema), hemovascular defects, necrosis and abnormal trunk in zebrafish embryos at 4 days post fertilization; teratogenic indexes (TIs) were 1.43 and 0.63 for ethyl acetate extract and distilled water extract, respectively. Our results also demonstrated that PM-W significantly increased the pigmentation level of embryos/larvae and induced melanin formation in human melanocytes. The amount of melanin in PM-W-exposed embryos/larvae was 2.2-fold and 1.71-fold greater than those in the control embryos/larvae and control melanocytes, respectively. Conclusion: Our study also showed that the increased level of pigmentation in PM-W embryos/larvae or melanin biosynthesis in melanocytes were both regulated by activation of tyrosinase. Conclusively, our study suggests that PM root extracts could be used as potential agents for treatment of early hair graying as well as various other diseases related to loss of pigmentation. However, these PM root extracts may also have some negative effects on embryos; therefore it should be careful when using for women during pregnancy.

The energy spectra of a novel version of graphene‐based Fibonacci superlattices (SL) are calculated. A new quasiperiodical factor is considered. The SL is built of graphene nanoribbons (GNR) and the quasi‐periodicity is formed due to the fact that different ribbons are used as individual elements of the SL and are placed along the lattice growth axis in accordance with the Fibonacci inflation rule. In one case, the SL is composed of smooth‐edges and a metal‐like armchair NR, and we propose to use a metal‐like and a semiconductor armchair NR for another case. It is shown that: (i) the difference in values of the quantized transverse quasi‐momentum of electrons for different NR is fully enough to form an effective quasi‐periodic modulation in the given structure (no additional factors are needed), and the range of the ribbon widths for this purpose is determined; (ii) it is important that this range is suitable for practice. We also analyze the dependence of the energy spectra of the studied structure on the geometric parameters of the superlattice as well as on the external electrostatic potential. Attention is drawn, in particular, that in each Fibonacci generation there is the Dirac superlattice gap. Varying the nanoribbons width one can change the spectra investigated flexibly. The conductance of the structure studied is also calculated. The results obtained can be useful in determining the optimum parameters of devices of the graphene‐based nanoelectronics.
