Influence of smoking habit on the frequency of micronuclei in human lymphocytes by the cytokinesis block method

Abstract: To evaluate the frequency of micronucleated lymphocytes in a normal population, 45 healthy subjects were analysed by using a modified cytochalasin B block method; the influence of some confounding factors (sex, age, smoking, etc.) were taken into account. Using a stepwise regression test smoking habits were found to have a statistically significant influence on the frequency of micronucleated cells and micronuclei. In addition, the mitotic and proliferative indexes, and the frequency of micronucleated lymphocy… Show more

“…Several factors can influence the frequency of MN in the cell, such as age [2,16,19,33,36,47] [30] showed that any chromosome could be present in MN. The mechanism by which the anesthetics induce DNA damage is still controversial.…”

“…In fact, although cigarette smoke contains many carcinogens and mutagens, the studies published to date that link smoking habits to MN frequency are rather controversial, with some showing a positive effect [26][27][28] and others showing no significance or even a negative effect [29][30][31]. The mechanisms underlying this phenomenon need to be studied in more detail.…”

“…Općenito uzevši, podaci o doprinosu navike pušenja porastu vrijednosti parametara MN-testa su kontradiktorni. Dok rezultati nekih istraživanja upućuju na štetan utjecaj navike pušenja i porast broja MN u pušača (13,28,(57)(58)(59)(60), dio istraživanja nije dokazao takvu povezanost (16,37,38,61). Rezultati opsežnog istraživanja provedenog u okviru projekta HUMN (62) ne pokazuju statistički značajan doprinos navike pušenja vrijednostima parametara MN-testa u "prosječnih" pušača, već samo u onih koji puše više od 30 cigareta na dan.…”
