Influence of silver cladding on the formation and alignment of the (Bi2−xPbx)Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+δ phase

Abstract: Cross-section transmission electron microscopy was used to investigate the interaction of silver with (Bi,Pb)-Sr-Ca-Cu-O phases during the formation of (Bi2−xPbx)Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+δ (Bi-2223) in a silver-sheathed wire containing a powder composed of (Bi,Pb)2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ (Bi-2212) plus second phases. Observations of the interfacial regions of samples quenched at different stages of conversion revealed that (1) Bi-2212 is initially in direct contact with silver, with the (001) planes parallel to the interface; (2) an… Show more

“…However, although there is no large-scale melting in a 2223-BSCCO composition composite (as there is for 2212 composites), there is liquid-assisted transformation of the 2212 phase to the 2223 phase [26]. Feng et al [24] and High et al [25] explicitly saw that Ag enhanced this phase conversion and Luo et al [18] subsequently presented evidence that liquid lies between the Ag and the BSCCO-2223 phase at short reaction times. Thus it seems reasonable to propose that the good bonding seen between BSCCO-2223 and Ag is also the result of a liquid-assisted accretion of the growing and transforming 2223 grain on to the Ag.…”

“…The influence of Ag in both YBa2Cu3OT (YBCO) and BSCCO tapes has been discussed by several groups [10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18]. It is widely believed that Ag positively encourages grain alignment in the Bi2Sr2CaCu2Oy (2212) and Bil.sPb0.4Sr2,0Ca2.2Cu3Ou (2223) compounds, but the mechanism by which this occurs is unclear in many respects.…”

“…Besides the content, the alignment of the (Bi,Pb)-2223 grains also has an important influence on the J c [24,27]. Figure 5 presents the texture evolution of the (Bi,Pb)-2223 grains in the mono-and 61-filament tapes with different sintering time recorded by rocking curves.…”

“…4). Nevertheless, because much more direct contacts between Ag and ceramic cores accelerate the formation of the (Bi,Pb)-2223 and the regions near the Ag sheath have a faster phase transforming rate [24,25], the 61-filament tapes therefore [26] reported that the (Bi,Pb)-2223 fraction in the mono-filament (Bi,Pb)-2223/Ag tape can reach to 90% and the J c of that achieved to 2784 A cm −2 after sintered for 20 h. The differences between the Ag-Ni sheathed and Ag sheathed (Bi,Pb)-2223 tapes will be mainly ascribed to the low diffusion of O 2 restrained by the outer Ni sheath, even if one edge of the Ni sheath is grinded off.…”

“…The 3221 phase is referred to as the Bi-doped "451" solid solution by Daesche et al [56,80]. It was initially discovered by Kitakuchi et al [91] and studied in detail by Luo et al [92]. The Ca 2 PbO 4 (1x 20) phase was found to form an extensive solid solution with Sr 2 PbO 4 .…”
