Influence of Side‐Chain Composition on Polythiophene Properties and Supramolecular Assembly of Anionic Polythiophene Derivatives

Abstract: A series of 10 polythiophene derivatives is reported, in which each polymer has a different percentage of carboxylic acidbearing repeat units. The properties of these polymers are explored under acidic conditions, where the carboxylic acid moieties remain neutral, and under basic conditions, where the carboxylic acid units become anionic carboxylates. The properties that are examined for both solutions and films include UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and red-edge optical band g… Show more

“…The spectral and photo-physical properties of conjugated polymers such as polyaniline (PANI), 1,2 poly (o-phenylenediamine) (POPD), 3,4 polypyrrole (Ppy), 5,6 polythiophene (PTh), 7,8 polyethylenedioxythiophene (PEDOT) 9,10 etc. are highly tunable in nature and can be altered by merely substituting the monomers with donor/ acceptor moieties to obtain emission in the near infrared (NIR) region.…”

“…The band gap is dependent on the concentration of dopant and can be controlled between 3 and 1 eV. [ 120 ] Furthermore, the band gap of PT can be substantially adjusted by changing the morphological and hence the geometrical structure of the repeating units in the polymer chain. The charge transfer in Li‐doped PA was investigated using comprehensive first‐principles computations, with the conclusion that electron or hole migration can result in a significant increase in electrical conductivity.…”
